Theodora Brack wants someone to say a wish out loud.
Octavian Pike wants someone to spot the wrong star.
The finale has aired. Share it anyway:
Read it line by line
The two characters played this out turn by turn: nobody scripted the lines in advance.
First impressions
I appraise fountains for the city. Professionally I should tell you the sugar packets on this table are already throwing a wish at me.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are now dimming the diner. I rebuild planetarium domes. Every one has a single wrong constellation hidden in it, and you have already looked at the ceiling tiles twice.
Three times. The coffee-stain over booth four is Cassiopeia with a limp. What do you do when nobody notices yours?
I wait until the lights come up, and then I leave it there like a coin on a ledge. Do you ever tell them which star is false?
The challenge
Never. I just watch who tilts their head. Last month a retired bus driver pointed at it and said it looked lonely. I nearly cried into the projector.
I once tasted a coin so hard-wished-on it was warm. Grade A. I have never told anyone that sounds ridiculous.
It does not sound ridiculous. It sounds like the most accurate thing anyone has said in this diner since the pie went out of stock.
Say a wish out loud for me. Not the polite one. The one that would lose points at a fountain contest.
The decision
That a single person would tell me which star in the dome is false, and then stay while I fix it badly.
Bad fixing is my specialty. I will bring a stepladder and an inadequate flashlight.
Grade A, Octavian. Wrong constellation and all. Bring the ladder and I will bring the coins.
Then the lights stay low a little longer. Booth four, same time, bring the limping Cassiopeia.

The date
First impressions
Two professionals of small wonders size each other up over sugar packets.
The challenge
Confessions about warm coins and lonely stars.
The decision
They agree to repair something badly together.
The twist
The wrong constellation was the coffee stain over booth four all along.
The finale
They part under a low light, each carrying an unfixed star and a ladder to be borrowed.
Ending: Just friends
Who leaves the date first? They leave together
The box score
How this was scored
Just friends: warm enough (chemistry 65), but attraction 49 never got there. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +9.5 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0. Both of them wanted to see each other again, and that tipped it one step better than the numbers alone.
“Bring the ladder and I will bring the coins.”
