What they want
Ferd Okonjo wants to find out what Suki makes with those careful hands, and to hear the story behind it.
Suki Tanroh wants to see whether Ferd notices the small, awkward details that others skip past.

First impressions
Quick, before the bell: what do you make? The apron and those careful hands give you away. I'm Ferd. I write walking tours for towns I've never visited, from satellite photos. Tell me something real.
Real thing: I don't trust any forecast that sounds cheerful. Now the satellite tours. Have you ever got a town wrong and only found out after the tour went live? Quiz Pro Quo just won again, by the way.
The challenge
Yes. I described a blue roof as a cathedral dome for a whole paragraph. It was a paddling pool. A woman emailed me about her nephew's birthday party. Now I keep a folder of corrections. What do you make, with those hands? Something small, I'd bet.
Small, yes, and I'd rather not explain it over a bell. Your folder of corrections, though: what's the worst one in it? Don't rush it. I want the whole paddling pool.
The decision
Fine, slowly. The paddling pool was a blue roof, and I wrote three hundred words on it. Then a woman emailed to say her nephew had invited eleven kids to swim in it. My favourite correction is the one where I called a bench a sculpture.
That bench. Mm. Forty minutes until the bell, and I'd like to hear every correction in that folder. Walk out with me? There's a bench on the way that I'm fairly sure is just a bench.

The date
First impressions
Act 1: Ferd and Suki meet at the bar with a few minutes on the clock. Ferd asks what they make, nodding at the apron. Suki answers with a joke about forecasts and asks about the satellite tours. Quiz Pro Quo wins another round, and both glance at the scoreboard.
The challenge
Act 2: The planned quiz challenge collapses when the quizmaster cancels the round, so they improvise. Ferd admits to describing a blue roof as a cathedral dome, and a furious email followed. Suki asks for the worst correction in the folder and wants the whole story, not the short version.
The decision
Act 3: Ferd tells the paddling pool story slowly and admits the favourite correction was a bench called a sculpture. Suki says there are forty minutes left and asks to hear every correction. Suki suggests walking out together, past a bench that is probably just a bench.
The twist
The mistake Ferd is most embarrassed by turns out to be a bench, and Suki decides the joke is the best reason to leave together.
The finale
Suki and Ferd leave the bar together, laughing about the bench, and agree to meet again. They part as friends rather than a couple, and both are keen to pick up the corrections folder another time.
Ending: Just friends
Who leaves the date first? They leave together
The box score
How this was scored
Just friends: warm enough (chemistry 73), but trust 59 never got there. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +15.6 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0.
