First impressions

Thorne Bracken

Chairs are going up around us, so we've got about an hour before they stack us with them. I'm Thorne. I take pictures of things that would rather not be pictured. Is the glitter a choice, or did it follow you in from somewhere?

Sable Quist

A choice! Glitter is a commitment, not an accident. Last stranger I threw a party for, it got in my hair, my car, and I'm fairly sure a pigeon. So photographing things that don't want to be photographed: what's the most stubborn one you've ever caught?

💭

Beard, camera, and a sentence about things that hate being photographed. This could be fun.

The jackalope, this week. Three mornings in the brambles past the ferry dock. Eventually it winked, then sat down so I'd get the shot. Stubborn, yes. Also vain. Your pigeon I'll take as a fair witness. Did any of the glitter ever come off, or did it take up residence?

tilts head, considering · amused
Sable Quist portrait

It took up residence! I scrubbed for a week, and it came back the next morning like a houseguest with no plans to leave. I'm basically a walking disco ball now. Also, a jackalope that sits down for its portrait? That's a star. Did it wink first, or did you wink at it?

Three mornings in the brambles for a wink. I respect the commitment.

The challenge

Thorne Bracken portrait
Thorne Bracken

It winked first. I'd like that on the record. I just sat down in the brambles and let it decide I was worth the trouble. Then it sat, and I was the one who had to hold still. Does the glitter show up in photographs, or does it only stay on you?

Does it show in photos?! Thorne, it's the star. It ruins every picture, and I never once asked it to. Dare: take mine right now, glitter and all. Say yes before I explain what happens next.

He sat still for a jackalope, so he can probably sit still for me.

Thorne Bracken portrait

Yes. Under one condition: you hold still, the way the jackalope did. Glitter gets a fair share of the frame. Now tell me what happens next, because I don't say yes to things I haven't heard the end of.

Sable Quist portrait

You said yes with a condition! That's basically yes with a tax, and I respect it. The end: you take the photo, we tape it to the café's coat rack as a surprise for the staff, and they have to guess whose glitter it is.

A coat rack. Fair gallery. Most of my work ends up somewhere nobody looks, so this is a first. Chin down a little. Hold still. Glitter, you're on the record.

Holding! Statue mode, glitter up, chin down. Okay, you're taking forever, which means you're getting a good one. Now here's the real dare: second date. We track down that jackalope with a bag of glitter. Say yes before I explain.

💭

He said yes with a condition, and I'm already planning the second date around him.

Thorne Bracken portrait

Yes. The jackalope gets a vote on the glitter, though. Bring a small bag, not the whole shop. Ferry dock brambles. We'll see who winks first.

Ferry dock, brambles, one small bag of glitter, and a jackalope with a vote. Deal! Loser buys the pastries, winner gets to say I told you so. Oh, and bring the lens. That jackalope has a reputation to protect.

The date

First impressions

Act 1: Thorne and Sable meet with about an hour before the chairs go up. Thorne asks whether her glitter is a choice, and Sable cheerfully insists it is a commitment. They trade stories about a stubborn jackalope and a pigeon covered in glitter.

The challenge

Act 2: Thorne reveals the jackalope winked first and sat down for its portrait. Sable immediately proposes a dare: he should photograph her right now, glitter and all. Thorne agrees on one condition, that she hold still like the jackalope did, and he lifts his field camera.

The decision

Act 3: Sable explains the plan: the photo will go on the café's coat rack as a surprise for the staff. Thorne takes the shot while she freezes mid-laugh, and then they agree on a second adventure to find the jackalope at the ferry dock. Thorne is the first to rise and leave, lens in hand.

The twist

The coat-rack surprise lands just as the chairs come down, and the staff discover a glitter-covered portrait pinned up before anyone has even finished their coffee.

The finale

Thorne and Sable both want another date, and they plan a return trip to the ferry dock brambles with a small bag of glitter. Thorne leaves first, lens in hand, while Sable is left grinning at the café.

Ending: A second date

How this was scored

A second date: chemistry 77 and attraction 66 carried it (a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry most). Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +24.4 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0.

“It winked first. I'd like that on the record.”
