Hello! Sorry, I'm already distracted. That table is oak, and the bar's been refinished in something cheap and pine, badly. Also, Quiz Pro Quo has won every round, which I find deeply suspicious. Are you on a team, or did you just come for the chaos?

Mack Blaze

No team. I came alone, which is about as far as I plan anything. I've also been checking the stool legs, and two of them are loose. How do you know it's oak? Did you read it off the grain, or is that just a thing you know about bars?

Theo Tidgewater portrait

Grain, mostly! Tight rings and open pores, plus it smells like a library that got rained on. Oh, right, so, the stools: I'd sit on the wobbly one. Chaos is more fun when you're already on the floor. Do you always check the furniture, or is that a stool-inspector thing?

Mack Blaze portrait

Both. I'm a stunt double, so I always check how far the floor is before I need to know. Occupational habit. And I'll take the wobbly stool since you're offering. Most of my best landings have been on the floor anyway. Your wood sense, though.

The challenge

Theo Tidgewater

Thank you! Wood sense is mostly grain and stubbornness. A stunt double, though? So you're paid to fall off things properly. Oh, right, so, what's your best landing? I've had a lot of bad ones, and I'd like to learn from someone who's good at it.

Paid to fall off things properly, yes. Best one was a three-storey balcony onto a stack of cardboard boxes I'd measured twice. Tuck, roll, stand up. The director cried. The trick nobody mentions is checking the floor first. So what went wrong with your bad ones?

dry
Theo Tidgewater portrait

Oh! Mine are mostly ceiling problems. I once cast a landing charm and checked the ceiling instead of the floor, so I came down straight into the sheep trough. Three times. The sheep were not impressed. Oh, right, so, do stunt doubles get a lot of sheep?

delighted
Mack Blaze portrait

No sheep. One goat, on a Western. It bit my cue card, which I took personally. Ceiling checks are a rookie mistake, though, and I respect that you've made it three times. So when the charm goes wrong, does it ever send you the wrong way on purpose?

The decision

Theo Tidgewater

Only when it's feeling mischievous, which is most Tuesdays. Last month it sent me up into the rafters instead of down the stairs, so I spent an hour up there talking to a crow about its feelings. Oh, right, so, did the goat get a fair trial? That cue card had it coming.

The goat got a fair trial. Wrangler Dale acted as its lawyer, and he was also eating the evidence. Guilty on all counts. Did the crow give you any useful advice, or just opinions about the rafters?

deadpan
Theo Tidgewater portrait

Practical advice, mostly. It said 'caw' in a very specific tone, which I'm translating as 'check the floor first.' Honestly, the best advice I've had from anyone with feathers. Oh, right, so, the balcony. Did the boxes ever shift on you, or did they hold?

trails off, smiling softly · dazed
Mack Blaze portrait

The boxes held. I'd measured them twice, which is the only reason I'll ever admit to. Also, I'm now taking crow advice seriously. Your scorched notebook has been staring at me since you sat down. What's in it, and do I get a demo?

The date

First impressions

Act 1: Theo bounces over, remarking on the oak table, the cheap pine refinish, and Quiz Pro Quo's suspicious streak. Mack admits he came alone, checks the loose stool legs, and asks how Theo knows the wood. Theo offers him the wobbly stool, and Mack takes it.

The challenge

Act 2: Mack asks about his best landing, a three-storey balcony drop onto measured cardboard boxes that made the director cry. Theo confesses his own bad landings, including checking the ceiling instead of the floor and landing in a sheep trough three times. Mack points out that a goat once bit his cue card.

The decision

Act 3: Theo says a crow gave him practical advice to check the floor first, then asks whether the boxes held. Mack says they did, and that he is now taking crow advice seriously. He spots the scorched notebook and dares Theo to show him what is inside, with a demo.

The twist

Mack, the man who measures everything twice, throws a dare at the scorched notebook without checking what he's getting into.

The finale

Theo and Mack leave the dive bar together, still trading jokes about goats and crows, and they plan another date. Neither one rejects the other.

Ending: A second date

How this was scored

A second date: attraction 77 and chemistry 74 carried it, and someone's want was met. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness and 2 for the tripped dealbreaker. This one came out +17.1 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0.

“The boxes held. I'd measured them twice, which is the only reason I'll ever admit to.”
