First impressions
A silent disco. Three hundred people dancing to nothing, and every headset leaks. Channel two is sharp. Channel three is a crime.
Channel three is a crime and the lift to the roof bar is worse. I rode it up. The door-close button has been pressed so often the paint is gone. Somebody in this building has never once waited for anyone.
Sorry. That was probably me. Doors that close slowly drift flat as they go. I can not stand to listen to it, so I press. Every time. Hard.
You press it. Hard. (long pause) Henrietta, I have run for lifts in eleven countries. Every one of those closing doors had a face behind it, and now, apparently, the face has perfect pitch.
The challenge
In fairness, nobody running for a lift has ever been in tune. You all pant in F. It is a very ugly F.
An ugly F. I have been called many things in a lobby, never a key signature. I could forgive the button. I am not sure I can forgive being transposed.
I would hold the door for you. I want that on record. I would hold it and hate every second of the drift.
That is the most romantic thing anyone has said to me in a building, and it is also a confession. I log both. You would hold it and hate it, and I would see you hating it, every single floor.
The decision
Every single floor. Yes. That is the trouble with being accurate, Odalys. You can not hide it from someone who inspects things.
No. And I would never stop hearing the button. Your E above middle C was right, though. I will tell every building you said so.
Tell them. And take the stairs home, Odalys. I will not be in them.
The stairs, then. Goodnight, Henrietta. Mind the doors.

The date
First impressions
Henrietta complains that channel three is a crime and holds one ear cup away from her head. Odalys, who rode the lift up, says the door-close button has been pressed so often the paint is gone. Henrietta confesses it was probably her and mimes jabbing the button, proud of it, and Odalys takes her headset off entirely.
The challenge
Henrietta jokes that people running for lifts all pant in an ugly F. Odalys says she can forgive the button but not being transposed, and folds her arms. Henrietta says, "I would hold the door for you. I want that on record," and switches to the silent channel.
The decision
Henrietta admits that being accurate means she can't hide things from someone who inspects them. Odalys says no, and that she would never stop hearing the button, though Henrietta's E above middle C was right. Henrietta tells her to take the stairs home, walks to the lift, looks at the button, and takes the stairs herself.
The twist
The woman who presses doors hard admits she would hold one for Odalys, only to hear Odalys turn her down in the same breath.
The finale
Odalys rejects Henrietta, and neither wants another date. Henrietta takes the stairs down alone, and Odalys leaves on foot with a wave.
Ending: A disaster
Who gets rejected? Henrietta Szabo-Quill
The box score
How this was scored
A disaster: Odalys's dealbreaker tripped, trust 36 finished low. The weak spot was awkwardness: how stiff it got. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness and 11 for the tripped dealbreaker. This one came out −13.5 against an ordinary date: friends needs +6.5, a second date +12.0.
“I would hold the door for you. I want that on record.”
