What they want

Kieran Mercy: Work out whether this bold, teasing stranger has a warm heart beneath the bravado, and keep the conversation light.

Star Dust: Get a genuine laugh out of him and see whether his dry humour can keep up with hers.

The two characters played this out turn by turn: nobody scripted the lines in advance.
First impressions
Star Dust. The stars did say noodles, and I see you brought their sense of humour too. Fair sailing to you. You're not late, which I'd rather you didn't tell me is a skill.
Punctuality is just a polite illusion. Let's see if your compass can track down the spiciest noodles here before they lock the doors.
Illusion or not, the needle is pointing at that counter, so I'm following it. Apparently lost things include lunch. Lead on. Before we go in, how far do you go for heat: one chilli, or the whole rack?
I take the whole rack and let whoever wakes up tomorrow handle the regrets.
The whole rack. Bold. I've watched sailors make that promise to a storm and then spend the night over the rail. Tell me, Star Dust, do the regrets usually find you, or do you go looking for them?
Regrets are just souvenirs with sharp edges. I travel light, but I've got room for a storm.
Souvenirs with sharp edges. I keep a few of those myself, though I've never been able to put them down. Hands in pockets, travelling light, and room for a storm. Is that a promise or a warning? The chairs are already going up, so I'd like to know which before we order.
The challenge
A little of both, depending on how bad the weather gets. Let's grab those noodles before the ghosts lock us out.
Ghosts, Star Dust. Doors have never been much of an obstacle to me. Still, a storm and a rack of ribs sounds like a fair bargain. Lead on before they stack the last chair on us.
If you walk through the glass, I'm billing you for the dry cleaning.
Charge away. The counter's still open and the chairs aren't. Order for both of us, and I'll take the rack, since you've made it a point of honour. Tell me something you do when nobody's dared you to eat anything.
I stare at the ceiling and count the water spots until they turn into constellations. Or I dance in the rain.
Constellations on a café ceiling. I'd have guessed the sea was the only thing that made them. Dancing in the rain I'll need to see for myself. Do you dance when someone's watching, or only when the sky is the only one there?
I only dance when the rain pays admission, and it's a cheap ticket.
The decision
Cheap, and the rain never asks for a refund. I'd pay admission to watch you do it, though I'd have to stand very still so nobody mistakes me for a draft. Fair warning: the noodles are coming, and I've seen what a whole rack does to a man.
If you're a draft, you're the expensive kind that ruins a good wig. Keep the admission fee; I work for tips anyway.
Ruining wigs is a fine hobby for a ghost with no hair to protect. Keep your fee, then. I'll tip the noodle man on your behalf and claim the credit for the company.
Credit for the company's a high price to pay, but I'll let you keep it. We're better off as friends anyway.

The date
First impressions
Kieran greets Star Dust with a courtly nod and a joke about her punctuality. She taps her high bun and calls the punctuality a polite illusion. He follows his brass compass to the counter and asks how far she goes for heat, and she claims the whole rack.
The challenge
The plan to eat quickly collapses as the chairs go up, so they improvise. Kieran asks what she does when nobody has dared her to eat anything, and she answers that she counts the water spots until they become constellations. He teases her about dancing in the rain and she says she only does it when the rain pays admission.
The decision
Kieran says he would pay to watch her dance if he could stand still enough not to be mistaken for a draft. She declines the fee and stirs her tea. He offers to tip the noodle man in her name, and she admits they are better off as friends.
The twist
Just as the staff stack the last chair, Kieran's compass swings toward Star Dust's bun, as if it has found something lost. The moment passes with a joke, and neither says what they were both thinking.
The finale
Star Dust hints at something more, and Kieran gently turns her down, so they settle on being friends. She slips her coat on and heads for the door, and Kieran bows and tips the noodle man on her behalf.
Ending: Just friends
Who gets rejected? Star Dust
The box score
How this was scored
Just friends: warm enough (chemistry 72), but trust 51 never got there, and Kieran's dealbreaker tripped. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness and 2 for the tripped dealbreaker. This one came out +14.7 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0.

Kieran Mercy's real dealbreaker was Cruelty. Mocking the lost or lonely. A closed heart has no light for me.. You didn't guess this one.
