What they want

Captain Lux Sideris is looking for a sharp, curious conversation partner and wants to see whether this stranger can keep up with her questions.

Juniper Vale is looking for someone who takes the ghost stories seriously enough to ask about them, and wants to see whether this stranger can make her laugh.

First impressions
Juniper Vale. Sounds like something pressed flat in a field guide, and I mean that kindly. I'm Lux. The grav-disc is supposed to be off, so if it starts humming, blame my nerves, not the coffee. What's the storm coat hiding? Besides a very large sweater, I'm guessing.
Lux. Like a lamp, or a deliberate choice? Yes, the coat is hiding a sweater, and a fair amount of salt. Your disc went round my head twice, which I'm choosing to take as a greeting. Nerves, or does it do that for everyone? Also, a straight question: do you believe in ghosts?
Nerves, yes. The disc only does that when I'm trying to look unbothered, so it's a tell. Ghosts? I'd say no, but I'd happily argue a recording that outlives its speaker counts as one. Now my question: why ask that first? Why that, why now, why not the weather?
Because I host a ghost-story podcast with eleven listeners, and the question saves time. Weather is what people say while they wait for the real thing. You said a recording that outlives its speaker might count. Is that a theory, or have you actually heard one?
The challenge
A theory, with a bit of firsthand evidence. I keep a backup of myself in a satellite orbiting a white dwarf, so I'm not sure a recording that outlives its speaker is hypothetical for me. Why would a ghost podcaster ask that? Why, specifically? And why only eleven listeners?

The date
First impressions
Lux sweeps into the booth with her grav-disc humming beside her and greets Juniper as a fellow contestant, asking why she chose the diner. Juniper answers in a flat, unhurried voice, mentions the gulls have not replied to her yet, and Lux responds with three rapid 'why's' that leave Juniper unbothered but intrigued. The waitress tops up both cups without asking.
The challenge
A man in a storm-battered coat, Harlan Pike, walks in unannounced. He was Juniper's old podcast producer and has come to pitch a 'proof of ghosts' segment for the diner's back booth. Lux treats the interruption as a live experiment, peppering Harlan with questions, while Juniper's dry replies show she has been hoping for someone who would not dismiss her world. Lux notices Juniper's loyalty to her listeners and Juniper notices Lux stepping in to protect the moment.
The decision
Harlan finally leaves, and the two of them sit with cold coffee, trading theories about the diner's ghost and laughing at their own absurd banter. Lux admits the evening is more interesting than any show she has hosted, and Juniper agrees, after a long pause, that the stranger is worth another look.
The twist
Harlan's unannounced 'proof' turns out to be a faded photograph of a sea mist shaped like a seal, which Juniper insists is the most convincing ghost she has ever seen, and Lux instantly demands a full investigation.
The finale
Lux and Juniper leave the diner together, the waitress calling them trouble as they go, and agree to plan another date somewhere with fewer interruptions. Nobody is rejected, and both are keen to see where the mystery leads.

The box score
How this was scored
A second date: chemistry 73 and attraction 73 carried it (a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry most), and someone's want was met. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +18.0 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0.

Captain Lux Sideris's real dealbreaker was A closed mind. If you think your tiny blue planet is the centre of the universe, or you're afraid to ask 'why,' we have nothing to talk about.. You didn't guess this one.
