What they want

Captain Seraphine Crane: Seraphine wants to see whether their easy rapport holds up when things get messy, and whether Juniper can be trusted to follow through.

Juniper Vale wants to get past the polished stories and find out whether Seraphine means what she says.

First impressions
Evening, stranger. You've got the look of someone who's been out on the water and came back with more than she left with. Tell me, did you win that coat off a sailor in a card game, or did it win you?

The date
First impressions
Act 1: Seraphine strides in with a brass compass on the table and orders extra-strong black coffee. Juniper arrives in a storm coat two sizes too big, announces the gulls said she'd be late, and sits down unbothered. They size each other up over the steam, trading dry remarks that land somewhere between a challenge and a warning.
The challenge
Act 2: The plan for the evening collapses when the kitchen's stove gives out and the cook walks off shift. They have to improvise: Seraphine talks the grumbling coffee machine back to life, while Juniper tells a ghost story that gets interrupted just before its twist. Tension flares, then gives way to a shared laugh over a pancake that refuses to flip.
The decision
Act 3: With the kitchen dark and the bill stuck on a broken card reader, they agree to split the mess and walk out into the fog together. Nothing is resolved, but neither is walking away alone.
The twist
The diner's lights die mid-story, leaving them in candlelight, and the waitress reappears to announce that the whole night is on the house, which only makes the chaos worse.
The finale
The date ends in a disaster, but they leave together into the fog, sharing a single umbrella and an unspoken agreement that this was enough. Neither of them wants another one.
Ending: A disaster
Who leaves the date first? They leave together
The box score
How this was scored
A disaster: trust 43 finished low, and that outweighed chemistry 71. The weak spot was awkwardness: how stiff it got. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +10.6 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0.
“I'd trust you to hold the wheel in a squall.”
