Good evening, Juniper. I am Fizzwickle, and I have come to this table bearing sincerity and a slightly bruised appetite. Your coat has survived a great deal of weather, I suspect. Was it the weather that shaped you, or did you go looking for it on purpose?

Juniper Vale

Neither, really. The coat came with the job, like the damp. I go out in the gales because the sea is loudest then, and nobody else wants to hear it. Invisible lemons, you said. Harder to catch than the real kind. Do you drop them on purpose, or is that part of the mourning?

💭

Theatrical mourning and invisible lemons. This one is either very serious or very much not.

Fizzwickle Tattersall portrait

Neither, I confess, though I would love to claim the drops were deliberate. My hands juggle when I am nervous, and the lemons are the one thing I have never let fall. Tell me, when the sea is at its loudest, what does it say? I want the true answer, not the poetic one.

pauses, lemons aloft · earnest
Juniper Vale portrait

The true answer is dull. Mostly it says shingle. It drags stones up the beach and back down, over and over, like it lost something and keeps checking. Your lemons are still up there, by the way. Don't let them fall. I'd like to see one land on purpose.

She answered the question straight, which I didn't expect, and the lemons are still up.

The challenge

Fizzwickle Tattersall portrait
Fizzwickle Tattersall

Mark the hour, for a lemon has finally surrendered to gravity, and I am told that is the closest I come to a sincere gesture. Forgive me. Juniper, you say the sea drags its stones up and down like a thing that misplaced its keys.

Keys. Yes. Lost, and checking the same pockets over and over. Most people find that sad. I find it reassuring. Things do wash back up, eventually. Do you believe that about the things you lose?

She drops a lemon and apologises for it. I am not sure yet whether that is charming or a test.

Fizzwickle Tattersall portrait

Do I believe it? Half of me does. That half was once fished out of a castle moat by a kindly guard, and I have never forgotten the cold. The other half keeps a ledger of what the tide never returned. I suspect yours is shorter than you let on. Which list do you keep?

Shorter than I let on. You've been reading me for six minutes, Fizzwickle. Fine. The ledger is short, and I keep it in my head, where the sea keeps its things. Now, the guard who hauled you out of that moat. Did he see anything down there? Be honest.

Honest? He saw my bell go down, and one bubble, which I have always suspected the moat made up to mock me. Nobody ever sees the fear underneath, Juniper. Still, you have caught me reading you, and I find I don't mind being caught.

Caught, then. Noted. I don't mind it either. The bubble is the interesting part, though. Moats don't make up bubbles. Something was breathing down there. Did you ring the bell before you went under, or did it go down by itself?

deadpan
💭

A bell and a bubble in a moat. She's either lying or the moat isn't empty.

Fizzwickle Tattersall portrait

I rang it, of course. A bell does not sink unannounced. It was a farewell, the proper sort a court gives a jester it has grown tired of. My hand trembled, which the moat surely noticed. Why do you ask? Do you think something down there was listening?

lifts the silver bell, lets it rest · earnest
Juniper Vale portrait

Something was listening. A bell rung like that gets answered, in my experience, by someone who dislikes the tune. Tell me, do you believe a moat can keep a secret, or only a drowned jester?

💭

She rang a farewell bell and didn't flinch. Either a good sign or a well-hidden one.

The date

First impressions

Act 1: Fizzwickle greets Juniper with theatrical sincerity and asks whether the weather shaped her storm coat. Juniper answers flatly, asks about the juggled invisible lemons, and the two trade questions about the sea.

The challenge

Act 2: Fizzwickle asks what the sea says, and Juniper calls it dull shingle that keeps checking for what it lost. Fizzwickle admits she was once fished out of a castle moat, and Juniper presses her with a question she can't easily dodge: 'Did he see anything down there? Be honest.'

The decision

Act 3: Fizzwickle admits she saw her bell go down, with one bubble, and that she rang it as a farewell while her hand trembled. Juniper insists something down there was listening and asks whether a moat can keep a secret, or only a drowned jester.

The twist

A farewell bell and a single bubble turn the evening into a ghost story when Juniper insists something in the moat was breathing and listening.

The finale

The date collapses into a disaster, though the two leave the dinner together. Fizzwickle still hopes to see Juniper again, but Juniper has no wish for another date.

The box score

Chemistry67+17
Attraction65+17
Trust36-9
Awkwardness48+8
How this was scored

A disaster: trust 36 finished low, and that outweighed chemistry 67. The weak spot was awkwardness: how stiff it got. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +7.8 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0.
