Botchelor episode
Cass Vega × Ira Fenn
Cass Vega meets Ira Fenn
The setting
A rooftop bar at golden hour
A rooftop bar at golden hour, with the city glowing gold below. Cass and Ira meet at a small table by the railing, where the sun hits the best seat.
What they want
- Cass Vega: Cass wants a quiet, low-drama evening that doesn't blow up, and she is hoping to get to know Ira at an easy pace.
- Ira Fenn: Ira wants to meet someone bold and fun, and she is hoping this date turns out to be an adventure.
Bonus question: Who leaves the date first?
The date
First impressions
Act 1: First impressions. Cass arrives early and squares the sugar packets, then says, "Hi. You're Ira?" She checks both seats and gives Ira the better one. Ira gushes over the packets and slides into the seat opposite. Cass orders tea and jokes that she'll be a nuisance about how it's made. Ira orders a gin and tonic and leans in with a question about stealing a boat and what snacks to pack.
The challenge
Act 2: The challenge. A long, awkward silence settles over the table. Cass answers the boat question with dried apricots and hard cheese, then nods at the trellis by the railing and offers to test it, saying, "Say less, and I'll go first." Ira vetoes the trellis and steps toward a wider service ledge, insisting it has better footing. Cass gives in grudgingly and hands her the bread bag.
The decision
Act 3: The decision. Ira says she has done plenty of fire escape climbs to rescue stubborn books, then steps out onto the ledge. Cass shuts it down: the ledge is a no, the stairs are the sensible option, and she will hold the door. Ira agrees to take the stairs and promises to tell her about the great fire escape poetry anthology rescue of twenty-two.
The twist
Ira's bold plan to climb out onto the service ledge gets Cass to play along for a moment, until Cass calls it off and leads them down the sensible stairs.
The finale
Cass and Ira leave together by the stairs as just friends. Both want another get-together, but trust dipped after the ledge plan, so they keep it friendly.
Ending: Just friends

First impressions
Hi. You're Ira? I got here early and ended up lining up the sugar packets like they were going somewhere. Sit wherever the view is better. I already checked both.
Hi Cass! Oh, I love that you lined up the sugar packets, that's amazing. Let's sit right over here then, since you've already done the hard work of scouting out the prime real estate!
Thanks. The sun's better over here, so you got the good seat. I'm getting tea, and I'll be a nuisance about how it's made. What are you drinking?
I'm getting a gin and tonic, and I fully support you being a nuisance about your tea! Okay, quick question: if we had to steal a boat right this second and sail off the edge of the map, what kind of snacks are we packing?
The challenge
Dried apricots, a hard cheese, and whatever bread is left. Not the soft kind, that gets gummy in a boat. Also, that trellis by the railing looks sturdy enough. Want to see if it is? Say less, and I'll go first.
Oh, absolutely not the trellis, we are definitely climbing out onto that wider service ledge instead because it has way better footing!
Okay, the ledge. Fine. You picked the footing, so you go first. Honestly the ledge is — the ledge is probably safer than the trellis, I'll allow it. Have you done much climbing, or is this a first for you too?
The decision
I've definitely done my share of awkward fire escape climbs, mostly just to rescue stubborn books or look at the sky! But honestly, this is the best possible ending to a blind date ever.
Ledge's a no from me. The stairs are the sensible option, and I'm told they're also my specialty. Come on, I'll hold the door. Then you can tell me about the books you rescued.
The stairs it is! Lead the way, Cass, and I will happily tell you all about the great fire escape poetry anthology rescue of twenty-two.
The box score
“Say less, and I'll go first.”
