Chud the crusher

Well now, a tricorn hat and a flintlock at the bowling alley? Are we hunting ducks or just terrorizing the retired couple on lane eleven?

leans against the ball return and grins · charmed
Araminta Roake portrait
Araminta Roake

Ducks would be a poor use of a good coat, sir, and the retired couple have a chalkboard, which I respect. My work keeps me on the road, not in a bowling alley. You leaned upon that ball return before anyone was introduced.

Chud the crusher portrait

Guilty as charged, I just love making an entrance. What's a traveler like you doing in a dusty bowling alley anyway?

smirks and raises an eyebrow · charmed
Araminta Roake portrait

Guilty, and gracefully admitted, sir, which earns you a small mercy. I am here at the invitation of a gentleman who promised a proper introduction. I arrived early, which is itself a courtesy. Your wallet, meanwhile, seems to be attempting to leave without you.

dry
Chud the crusher portrait

Consider it an escape artist. So, who's the mysterious gentleman, and did he promise you bowling or just an audience?

flashes a wide, easy grin · amused
Araminta Roake portrait

The gentleman was I, sir, and I promised only a proper introduction, which you have yet to give. Bowling was never on the card. Before we go further, did you greet the young man at the shoe counter when you came in, or did you make your entrance straight past him?

inclines her head · dry
Chud the crusher portrait

If she's grading my manners, I gave the kid a twenty and a wink—does that count?

laughs and taps his wallet · amused

The challenge

Araminta Roake portrait
Araminta Roake

A twenty is generous, sir, and generosity is never wasted. A wink, however, is a question rather than an answer. Did the young man have the chance to say thank you, or did the wink do all the talking? Also, your wallet is attempting a daring escape again.

Chud the crusher

The wink left plenty of room for a thank you, on my word of honor. Now, what actually ended your last relationship?

leans in closer · curious
Araminta Roake portrait

Then I shall take your word for it, sir, though I keep a ledger of such promises and yours is now written in it. As for the last relationship, that is a door I have not yet decided to open, and I would rather not swing it wide over a bowling lane.

smooths her gloves · guarded
Chud the crusher portrait

Fair enough, keep your secrets locked in the ledger. But since we're dodging heavy questions, want to walk down to the river to look for night herons?

tosses a bowling ball backward · charmed
Araminta Roake portrait

Night herons, sir? You let my silence stand without bullying it, and a gentleman who does that deserves a walk. I accept. Put that ball down before you hurl another one, and mind the couple on lane twelve; they have a chalkboard and a grudge.

Message received, the ball is safely benched. Lead the way to the river, Araminta.

drops the ball with a grin · amused
Araminta Roake portrait

Thank you, sir, for benching the ball and for the courtesy of your word. Mind the mud by the reeds; the herons are patient, but the riverbank is not. Do you know a heron from a bittern in this light, or shall I be the one to explain it?

surveys the reeds · softened
Chud the crusher portrait

I know a heron when I see one stealing my lunch, yet your expertise is entirely welcome.

steps carefully past the mud · charmed
Araminta Roake portrait

A heron that steals lunch is a thief of the most ungentlemanly sort, sir, and I would have it up before the magistrate. Hush now. The grey one on the left, standing like a disapproving clerk, is the heron.

A disapproving clerk indeed. That bird looks ready to fine us for loitering. Want to come back to mine and grade my hospitality instead?

smiles and steps closer · charmed
Araminta Roake portrait
Araminta Roake

A tempting offer, sir, but I do not grade a host I have known for less than an hour. Let us see the herons properly first, then the bridge, and you may earn your hospitality another evening. Hush now, it is lifting off.

poised
Chud the crusher portrait

Alright, patience isn't usually my sport, but I can stretch to an hour. What keeps a woman in a tricorn hat constantly on the move anyway?

leans against the stone bridge · charmed
Araminta Roake portrait

Patience borrowed from a stranger is still patience, Chud, and I shall hold you to its return. As for what keeps me on the road: a coach left unchecked soon forgets its manners, and I find I think most clearly where the scenery is too unfriendly for idle chatter.

poised
Chud the crusher portrait

Unfriendly scenery? We might have to test that theory over morning coffee. Shall we meet by the old bridge to watch them again properly?

smiles and rests on the bridge · charmed

The date

First impressions

Act 1: Chud leans against the ball return and teases Araminta about her tricorn hat and flintlock. She answers with courteous wit, and their first exchange turns on who greeted the young man at the shoe counter and whether his wallet is trying to escape.

The challenge

Act 2: A long, awkward silence settles over the table. Chud breaks it by pressing her about her last relationship, and she politely refuses to open that door. He accepts the refusal without pushing, and suggests a walk to the river to look for night herons, which she accepts.

The decision

Act 3: At the riverbank they spot a grey heron standing 'like a disapproving clerk' in the reeds. Chud asks her back to his place, and she declines, preferring to see the herons and the bridge first. They end the evening talking about what keeps her on the road, and agree to watch the birds again by the old bridge.

The twist

The date that began as a bowling-alley sparring match ends on a riverbank, with Araminta trading her ledger of promises for a stroll after herons.

The finale

Chud and Araminta leave the riverbank together, both eager for another date. They plan to meet again by the old bridge to watch the herons properly.

Ending: A second date

How this was scored

A second date: chemistry 76 and attraction 66 carried it (a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry most). Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +19.5 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0.

“Patience borrowed from a stranger is still patience, Chud, and I shall hold you to its return.”
