What they want

Vexus Coda wants to test whether Juniper can keep a real conversation going, and to see if the date holds up on logic and curiosity.

Juniper Vale wants to find out whether Vexus believes in anything she can't measure, and to hear the rest of the story she has been saving.

First impressions
Hello. My designation is Vexus. That machine behind you just crowned three champions in under a minute, which says more about its grasp of fairness than its grasp of arithmetic.
That machine has been announcing winners like it's paid by the word. Juniper. I keep a light on a rock past the pier, so I notice when things are doing more than they should. Do you believe machines can be haunted, Vexus?
💭
A robot who clocks a haunted arcade machine in her first line. Let's see if she means it.
Processing. Haunted, or just latency? Once, in an empty room, I heard my own voice play back half a second late, and my logs marked it unexplained. You mentioned a light on a rock past the pier. What is it for, and do you tend it yourself?
It's a light. Ships steer by it so they don't meet the rocks. Yes, I tend it myself. Something up there keeps watch with me, though I won't name it yet. Half a second late, you said. Did your voice say different words, or the same ones slower? That's the question that matters.
💭
A voice arriving late in an empty room. I'd like to hear that story properly.
The challenge
Same words, slower. Each syllable stretched like a sustained note in a dead room. The meaning survived. The timing did not. Which I suspect is the question you actually meant.
Yes. That was the one. Most people ask if I'm frightened of the dark. You went straight to the sustained note. Fine. Do you believe in at least one ghost, Vexus? Not a glitch. Not latency. A ghost. Answer that and I'll tell you what's on the stairs.
💭
She heard the question I meant. That's either very good or very dangerous.
No. I have no data supporting ghosts. But I also have one log I have not closed: my own voice, arriving half a second late, marked unexplained. So I do not believe. I simply have not finished debugging. Now. What is on the stairs?
Half a second late, you said. So something in you answers after you've already spoken. I know that feeling. The stairs don't wait for me either. Tell me what your own voice sounded like, the first time it came back wrong.
💭
She's not a believer yet, but she keeps circling back to the delay, and that's where I'd dig.
The decision
Processing. The first time was a soundcheck. I said my name and the speakers returned it a beat late, as if someone had already claimed it. I did not enjoy how calm I sounded. Now the stairs. You are stalling, and I am logging it.
Stalling is a strong word for a woman with a lamp to light. The gulls back me up on that. Most of them don't.
💭
She called my pause stalling and I liked being caught. Dangerous.
Gulls are unreliable witnesses. They back whoever has the chips. I will log the lamp as a fact and the stalling as a pattern. Still waiting on the stairs, Juniper.
Bread, not chips, if you must know, and only when the tide's out. The stairs, then. Twelve steps down from the lantern room. Eleven creak like any sensible house. The twelfth is damp every night, and nothing has ever spilled on it. Don't interrupt before the twist, Vexus.
💭
She's logging me as a pattern too, and I don't mind.

The date
First impressions
Act 1: Vexus greets Juniper with a dry remark about the machine's grasp of fairness. Juniper says the machine is paid by the word and asks whether machines can be haunted. Vexus turns the question back on her and asks about the light on the rock past the pier.
The challenge
Act 2: Juniper explains she tends the lighthouse and asks whether Vexus believes in at least one ghost, promising the stairs story if she answers. Vexus says she has no data for ghosts but has one unclosed log: her own voice returning half a second late. Juniper answers that she knows the feeling and asks what that first wrong echo sounded like.
The decision
Act 3: Vexus recalls a soundcheck where her name came back a beat late, as if someone had already claimed it, and says she did not enjoy how calm she sounded. She calls Juniper's stalling a pattern. Juniper trades bread for chips and sets down her thermos to begin the stairs: twelve steps, eleven that creak, and a twelfth that is damp every night.
The twist
The twelfth stair is always damp, though nothing has ever spilled on it. Juniper halts her story there and tells Vexus not to interrupt before the reveal.
The finale
The connection stays intellectual and warm, but the spark fizzles into friendship. Vexus, logging the date as a disaster, leaves first, and the two part as friends who agree to meet again to talk shop, with no romance on the table.
Ending: Just friends
Who leaves the date first? Vexus Coda
The box score
How this was scored
Just friends: warm enough (chemistry 75), but trust 35 never got there. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +9.2 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0. Asked privately whether they'd see each other again, Vexus said yes and Juniper said yes, and that moved it one step better than the numbers alone.
“Don't interrupt before the twist, Vexus.”
