First impressions

Good evening. Forgive the staring, but I'm a professional admirer of things that have outlasted their own bodies. That coffee cup never empties, I notice. Is it a trick of the house, or are you simply very well insulated? And the 1979 pin: whose was it first?

Little of both, daddy-o. The house is haunted, I'm haunted, and the coffee's stubborn. The pin was Dottie's, the waitress who ran the counter back in '79. It passed to me when she clocked out for good. Ownership gets fuzzy when you're dead.

The challenge

Dottie's pin, passed down like a good overcoat. I approve. You said the coffee's stubborn, so I'm curious: does it stay warm, or does it just never run out? Also, fair warning, I keep an owl named Reginald. Does that unsettle you at all?

Lukewarm since Carter, daddy-o. It never runs out because it never really gets drunk. Reginald? Does he hunt, or just judge? A ghost can handle a lot, but an owl giving you the side-eye from a perch is a whole different haunting. What's his opinion on disco?

The decision

He judges, mostly. Retired from hunting years ago, now he merely adjudicates. Disco? He calls it a dance for people who've never grieved properly, but I've caught him tapping a talon to the Bee Gees. Come meet him. He'll give you the side-eye, and you can give it back.

Reginald tapping the Bee Gees is the most honest thing I've heard all night. Disco's got more grief in it than he thinks, it just wears sequins. Bring him to the diner. You and me, one jukebox pick, and he gets to judge the results.

The date

First impressions

Barnaby Quillfeather eyes the never-emptying coffee cup and asks about the 1979 pin. Soren Valdís shrugs, calls the house haunted, says the pin was Dottie's and passed to him when she clocked out for good. Quick nods, quicker grins, and the drummer crashes a cymbal.

The challenge

A long, awkward silence settles over the table. Barnaby breaks it by asking whether the coffee stays warm and whether Soren is unsettled by Reginald. Soren fires back: is the owl a hunter or just a judge? He slides his cup an inch closer, and the silence starts to thaw.

The decision

Barnaby says Reginald has retired from hunting and now merely adjudicates, and secretly taps a talon to the Bee Gees. Soren decides the disco grief is real, just wearing sequins, and proposes they bring Reginald to the diner. Soren vanishes first at the final cymbal, leaving the cup behind. Barnaby is left with a grin and the drummer's last solo.

The twist

Reginald, the owl who judges everything, has a secret soft spot: he taps a talon to the Bee Gees. Soren immediately wants to meet the bird.

The finale

Soren Valdís leaves first, fading out at the final cymbal and leaving his cup behind. Both want another date, and they plan to bring Reginald to the diner so he can judge the jukebox picks. It ends a second date, not a rejection.

Ending: A second date

How this was scored

A second date: chemistry 83 and attraction 62 carried it (a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry most). Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +22.3 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0.

Guess the dealbreaker

Armand Valois's real dealbreaker was Consistently dismissing history as irrelevant. A lack of curiosity about the world, past or present, leaves me utterly adrift.. You didn't guess this one.
