First impressions

You found the one patch of hill without a rock in it. Sit, if you like. The grass won't mind your weight, and I'll try not to mind mine. Tell me something about your hands first, though. They've clearly been busy.

Do they? I've been replanting moonflowers since sundown, and one of the old mares decided my knuckles looked like a snack. Isn't that a rude way to be inspected? Do stone hands ever get tired of holding still, or do you just get used to it?

Marna Gorthal portrait

Oh, I see. An old mare with good taste, then. I'd nibble your knuckles too, they look like they've earned it. As for holding still, stone doesn't get tired, it settles. My left knee did complain all last winter, though.

Your knee complains? Isn't that a wonderful thing to learn about someone carved from stone? Does it ache before the rain, the way my old mares' hips do? And what does a stone knee sound like when it's unhappy, a grind, or more of a sigh?

The challenge

A grind, mostly, like a cart wheel on gravel. The sigh only comes when the weather turns. Yes, it aches before rain, and I follow the weather reports for pleasure. A low-pressure system is the closest thing I have to a novel.

A low-pressure system is a novel? Isn't that the loveliest thing anyone's said to me all week? Does your knee give the warning first, or does the sky? I'd like to know which of you is the better forecaster.

Marna Gorthal portrait

The sky, usually, and I'm only ahead of it by an hour or so. The knee is the early warning, but it exaggerates. Last March it sighed at a cloud the size of a thumb, and nothing came of it. The pigeons know before either of us, though.

So the pigeons are the real forecasters, and your knee is just the one polite enough to warn you first. Do they ever roost on you, or is that too personal a question for a gargoyle? Isn't it strange how the smallest creatures always seem to know first?

The decision

They roost on my shoulders, never my head. That's a matter of manners. Two grey hens take the left parapet most nights, and a scruffy one with a torn wing keeps trying to take my spot. I haven't named them. Well, not aloud.

Not aloud. Isn't that the most sensible kind of naming? I say my seven unicorns' names out loud every morning, moon phases and all, so nobody can claim they weren't called. Would you tell me just one name, quietly? My guess is the torn-wing one.

leans closer, listening · warm
Marna Gorthal portrait

Thistle, you're right, it's the torn-wing one. Come closer and keep your voice down. Her name is Brisk, and the grey hens would never forgive me. Seven unicorns, named aloud every morning? I'll believe that when I see his hay bills.

Brisk. I won't say it louder than a moonflower opens. Why Brisk, though? Is it the way Brisk takes the parapet, all hurry and no apology? As for my hay bills, isn't it unkind to judge a rancher by his receipts? Would you tell me what your knee thinks of this conversation?

The date

First impressions

Act 1: Marna Gorthal greets Thistle Umber on the hill and asks about his hands, which are dusty from replanting moonflowers. He jokes that an old mare nibbled his knuckles, and she teases back that she would too. They trade remarks about stone that doesn't tire and a knee that complains before rain.

The challenge

Act 2: The talk turns to forecasting. Marna Gorthal says the sky usually warns her first, and the pigeons know before either of them. Thistle Umber asks whether the birds roost on her, and she says they sit on her shoulders, never her head, out of good manners. She admits she hasn't named the scruffy one with the torn wing, 'not aloud.'

The decision

Act 3: Thistle Umber guesses the torn-wing pigeon is the one she secretly named. Marna Gorthal leans in and whispers that its name is Brisk. Thistle Umber takes the confidence quietly, and then asks what her knee thinks of their conversation.

The twist

Marna Gorthal shares a secret name, Brisk, for a scruffy pigeon, and Thistle Umber guesses it correctly, turning a small joke into a private moment between them.

The finale

The two of them stay on the hill, leaning close and whispering, until they decide they want more evenings like this. They head down the slope together, already planning another date without setting a day or time.

How this was scored

A second date: attraction 84 and chemistry 69 carried it, and someone's want was met. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +18.7 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0.

“Not aloud. Isn't that the most sensible kind of naming?”
