What they want

Marina Crabthorne: Find out whether this stranger can keep up with her wit and her odd little world, and whether they are worth a second look.

Kass Verdant: Keep things light and playful while finding out whether this sharp-tongued woman is more than a joke.

First impressions
Well, the goat has excellent taste and no manners, which I respect. You're standing like someone who's been told to wait for a ferry that never comes. Are you here for the stretching, or did someone dare you into the mud?
Stretching, officially. Unofficially I was told a goat would sort out my back. So far it's just eaten my program. Your hair's giving me weather warnings, by the way. Is that a deliberate effect or did the wind pick you?
Deliberate, obviously. The wind has never once picked me; I choose my weather. Though a gull did try to nest in it this morning, so I can see your concern. Tell me, what does that little snuffbox hold, if it never holds snuff?
Something that's mine, for now. Honesty's overrated. A secret kept properly is a gift, and I'm not unwrapping it for a stranger with a salt shaker. Your shaker, though. Salt or ground pearl, who decides which one you get on a given morning? The shaker, or you?
The challenge
The tide decides, of course, though it has the courtesy to consult me first. The shaker only does as it's told. Honesty overrated, you say? A bold claim from someone carrying an empty snuffbox like a love letter they never sent.
A love letter, is it? That's a rich thing to call a snuffbox from someone who's only known me for five minutes. Is that what you think I'm carrying, or is that just the sort of phrase you reach for?
Guilty. I reach for a phrase the way a gull reaches for a dropped chip, without asking whose it is. But you've turned that box over twice now, which tells me the phrase landed somewhere. So: is it empty, or keeping something it won't name?
Keeping something it won't name. The lid sticks, so don't bother prying. Fine, the tide picks your shaker. What did it pick this morning? You've got the look of someone it argued with.
The decision
This morning the tide picked pearl, which it knows I dislike before breakfast. Then a gull stole my second kipper and the tide sided with the gull, so yes, we argued. Now, a snuffbox with a sticking lid that never holds snuff.
The gull's the only honest thief on this coast. Took your kipper in broad daylight, no forged papers. And the tide sided with it? Smart tide. As for the box, it's not a love letter. It's more of a receipt. Ask me again when the lid gives.
A receipt, for something you won't name. You're a difficult customer, Kass. Hecate would approve; she's a one-eyed herring gull and a thief too, but she always leaves the paper behind. Now tell me the truth: do you eat your chips with a fork? The tide is watching.
Fork? Chips come off the paper with the vinegar still on your thumbs. A fork is for people who've never had to race a gull for one. Hecate sounds like she's got the right priorities. Does she take the kipper, or does she come for the company?

The date
First impressions
Marina Crabthorne sizes up Kass Verdant from the goat-yoga mat, calling the goat's taste excellent and asking whether Kass is stretching or was dared into the mud. Kass deadpans that a goat was supposed to fix their back, and teases Marina's windswept hair as a weather warning. Marina claims the wind has never picked her, and asks about the snuffbox that never holds snuff. Kass refuses to unwrap the secret for a stranger, and asks who decides between salt and ground pearl in her shaker.
The challenge
Marina says the tide decides, then calls Kass's empty snuffbox a love letter never sent. Kass pushes back on the phrase, and Marina admits she reaches for phrases without thinking whose they are, but notes the box has been turned over twice. Kass says the lid sticks and the box is keeping something it won't name. The two trade barbs about the tide and the shaker, and Kass asks what the tide picked this morning.
The decision
Marina explains the tide picked pearl, then a gull stole her second kipper and they argued. Kass praises the gull as the only honest thief on the coast and calls the snuffbox a receipt, asking to be asked again when the lid gives. Marina calls Kass a difficult customer and names her one-eyed gull thief, Hecate, before testing Kass on chips and forks. Kass rejects forks and nudges the snuffbox toward the goat.
The twist
Marina's gull rival Hecate turns out to be a real thief who stole her kipper that morning, so the 'love letter' jibe became a running feud over a bird. Kass, meanwhile, ends the date more interested in the goat than in the woman across from them.
The finale
The date ends flat. Marina turns Kass down, and neither of them wants another date, leaving the snuffbox still shut and the goat unimpressed.
Ending: A disaster
Who gets rejected? Kass Verdant
The box score
How this was scored
A disaster: Marina's dealbreaker tripped, trust 33 finished low, and that outweighed chemistry 72. The weak spot was trust: how safe they felt opening up. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness and 2 for the tripped dealbreaker. This one came out +7.8 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0.
