What they want

Odalys Brandt-Nwosu wants to find out whether Nell can keep up with the ledger-and-hedge side of her life, past the first impression.

  • Nell Abiodun portrait

First impressions

OB
Odalys Brandt-Nwosu

Nell, you came back. The ledger has a pigeon alone in its column, so you've got some catching up to do. On the wind: dusk is when the air near the water goes slack and stops mixing, and I've learned that by standing in cold dark places waiting for it.

You came. Hi. I rehearsed a better hello on the walk over, and it was better in my head. Dusk and a slack current, though, that's a real detail. Did you find the still air by feel, or did you check a chart first? And the balloon: you never said what wrong looks like.

OB

Feel first, then the chart, which takes it personally. Wrong looks like a balloon bursting at two thousand feet instead of thirty thousand, and then a small pale rag coming down in somebody's hedge. I log where it lands, not just when.

Nell Abiodun portrait

Thirty thousand is low for a burst, most go a lot higher, but I won't argue with a hedge. You said you log where it lands. Did you ever find the rag, or just the hedge? And what made you start keeping a ledger in the first place?

The challenge

OB
Odalys Brandt-Nwosu

Half the time I find the rag. The other half, the hedge keeps it, and I count that as a result too. The ledger started when I was nineteen and wrote down a launch I'd missed, then realised I'd never once written down where anything came down. I still think about that.

Nineteen seems like a fair age to notice you've been filing the wrong column. Sorry, that's a tangent. Was the missed launch one you'd driven out for, or did it just happen near you while you weren't looking? I'd like to know which one stung more.

OB

I'd driven out. Forty minutes in the dark with a flask, and I'd parked in the wrong field, so I watched the hedge from the wrong side. Which means I got to see it fail from the road. Do you wait for things like that, or do you mostly read about them afterwards?

turns the ledger over · warm
Nell Abiodun portrait

Mostly I read about them afterwards. I'm a night guard, so I'm usually standing in a gallery after the thing has already happened, looking at what's left in the cases. Parking in the wrong field is its own small disaster, though.

The decision

OB
Odalys Brandt-Nwosu

So you spend your nights with the aftermath, which is the hedge of the museum world. I'd want to know which case you keep going back to, the one you've had to look at most.

Sorry, that's a small answer to a big question. A lead pipe in the basement, stamped with the maker's name. I read the stamp every shift, as if it might have changed. Do you go back to your hedges? Or once they're logged, do they stay logged?

warm
OB

Mostly they stay logged. But I drive past the hedge each spring to see what's grown over it. Last year a rag was still caught in there, bleached nearly white. I left it alone. What does the stamp say? And if you read it one night and it had changed, what would you do?

curious
Nell Abiodun portrait

It says the maker's name and a town, worn soft at the edges. Plumbum is Latin for lead, which is where 'plumber' comes from, so the basement has a family joke I'm not sure anyone upstairs gets.

The date

First impressions

Act 1: Odalys greets Nell with a dry joke about the lone pigeon in her ledger, and explains that dusk is when the air near water goes slack. Nell replies with a rehearsed hello that she says was better in her head, then asks how Odalys finds still air, and what a wrong launch looks like.

The challenge

Act 2: The stroll is off, so they improvise at the railing. Odalys describes a balloon bursting at two thousand feet and a rag landing in a hedge, and says she started her ledger at nineteen after a missed launch. Nell admits she mostly reads about things afterwards, since she spends her nights in galleries looking at what's left in the cases.

The decision

Act 3: Odalys asks which case Nell keeps going back to, and Nell describes a lead pipe in the basement stamped with a maker's name, which she reads every shift. Odalys says she still drives past her old hedge each spring. They part at the railing, the conversation still unfinished, and neither is keen to go again.

The twist

The stamp Nell reads every shift turns out to be a lead pipe with a family joke about plumbing, and Odalys's hedge-rag, still caught and bleached nearly white, becomes the thing they both keep returning to.

The finale

The date ends in a disaster, and Odalys and Nell leave the canal together, but neither wants another date. The evening simply runs out of things to say at the railing.

Ending: A disaster

The box score

Chemistry69-1
Attraction52+4
Trust53+2
Awkwardness42+2
How this was scored

A disaster: nothing landed hard enough (best was chemistry 69). The weak spot was awkwardness: how stiff it got. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +10.6 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a third date +16.0. Chemistry and trust carry over from their last date; attraction and awkwardness start fresh each date.
