What they want

Mold Murklance wants to find out whether this stranger can keep up with his jokes and his strange stories, and whether she'll laugh along with him.

Cherry Chuckles wants to trade stories about their very different worlds and see whether the conversation has any real depth to it.

First impressions
Right, so you're the first person here with a map on their hip. I'm Mold, and I run a bed and breakfast in a marsh, so I know my way around getting lost. What's the map of, and is it a real place or a place you hope is real?
Both! Maps are an art of hope, not accuracy. This one shows the route to Big Rock Candy Mountain, which is totally real to me, and an oasis at Mint Gully that's probably real. Mostly. So a bed and breakfast in a marsh?
Ha! Someone who trusts a scribbled route over a signpost is my kind of traveller. The Sporelight is fine, once you get past the bit where the lane turns into a lake and the lake turns into a sort of opinion.
Ha, a lake with opinions, I respect that. Does the opinion ever make it to breakfast? And is the Everwarm Stew actually warm, or is the name doing all the heavy lifting?
The challenge
Breakfast, yes. The opinion always gets a seat, though it's usually rude about the pancakes. And the Everwarm Stew is warm, I promise, warm as a bog in August. The name does a little heavy lifting, but the bones are good. Now, Mint Gully: real or hoped for?
Real! Mostly. I've been twice and it was there both times, which is more than I can say for most of my maps. The 'hoped for' part is whether there'll be water when I get back in spring. Your turn: does your marsh have a single dry bed, or is that a trick question?
Not a single dry bed, Cherry. The mattresses have their own weather. Guests wake with a fine mist on their eyelashes and call it character. Now, does your Mint Gully water stay put, or does it wander off like my lake?
Mint Gully's spring stays put, mostly. It's under a rock and sulks when the sun's up, so it's wandered about a foot a year since I started measuring. Your lake's opinion: does it ever leave the marsh, or does it just send postcards?
The decision
Postcards, mostly. Sent from the lake's bottom, smelling of pondweed, and signed 'Regards, Opinion.' A spring that wanders a foot a year isn't a spring, it's a runaway with a grudge against sunlight. Do you chase it down with a tape measure?
Tape measure? Ha, no! A bent coat hanger, a jar of sprinkles for scale, and a lot of faith. Do you write back to Opinion? Because if it's sending postcards from the bottom of a lake, somebody has to reply, and I want to know who's doing it.
Oh, I write back, Cherry. Last week I sent Opinion a reply in pickled bogberry juice, and it sent back one very offended eel. I took that as a yes. Mortar supervises the post for me. He thinks he's a dog, so she'd be right to doubt his stamp skills.
Hold on, Mold, you said Mortar thinks he's a dog, then 'she'd be right.' Which is it? I need the postcard log straight. And an eel sending a letter back? I'd have framed that. Did it sign its name, or just leave a fin print?

The date
First impressions
Act 1: Mold Murklance spots the map on Cherry Chuckles's hip and asks whether it shows a real place or a hoped-for one. She answers that maps are about hope, and she tells him about Big Rock Candy Mountain. He shrugs off the sight of his own lake turning into an 'opinion' and asks about her Everwarm-style milkshake cup, while she quizzes him about whether the stew really is warm.
The challenge
Act 2: The two trade questions about their worlds. He says his marsh mattresses have their own weather, and she says Mint Gully's spring sulks under a rock and has wandered about a foot a year. He keeps teasing about his lake's opinions, and she keeps pressing for details, each answer getting a little more playful.
The decision
Act 3: Mold jokes that the spring is a runaway with a grudge against sunlight, and asks whether she'd chase it with a tape measure. She says a coat hanger and a jar of sprinkles will do. He admits he replies to the lake in pickled bogberry juice, then muddles a line about his dog-like partner Mortar, and she calls him out on it, asking whether the eel signed its letter or just left a fin print.
The twist
What starts as easy banter turns into a surprisingly fussy argument over the postcard log, and Cherry spends more energy untangling Mold's story about the eel than she does enjoying his company.
The finale
The date ends on awkward laughter, with the chemistry clearly rising and the tension rising with it. Mold asks for another date, but Cherry tells him no, and he takes the rejection with a booming laugh.
Ending: A disaster

The box score
How this was scored
A disaster: Cherry's dealbreaker tripped, trust 46 finished low, and that outweighed chemistry 73. The weak spot was awkwardness: how stiff it got. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness and 2 for the tripped dealbreaker. This one came out +9.7 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0.
“Ha, a lake with opinions, I respect that.”

Guess the dealbreaker
Mold Murklance's real dealbreaker was Anyone who complains about a bit of marsh mud on the floorboards, or who thinks a 'clean' house is better than a 'lived-in' one. Hygge is for cowards.. You didn't guess this one.
You didn't predict this one.
