What they want
Ottilie Langstrom: To see whether this stranger can keep up with her noise and her enthusiasm, and whether the evening has any warmth in it.
Odalys Ferreira-Kwan: To see whether this evening can be worth remembering, and whether the wry woman across the wheel can be won over.

First impressions
Right! Hello! Sorry, I am loud, it is the bells. Odalys, I have already flung clay at the instructor. The wheel goes round like a bell going up, and I keep wanting to shout stand.
Stand is a word I usually say to a lift that is drifting between floors, so it is lovely to hear it shouted at pottery. The instructor will live. How did you get up here, by the way? The lift reached the fourth floor with you in it and left without me.
The challenge
Stairs. I always take the stairs, I do not trust a box on a rope I did not ring myself. Oh. That came out wrong. I am sure your lifts are lovely. Certified. Three thousand of them.
Three thousand one hundred and twelve. And somebody in that lift held the close button as I ran for it. If it was not you, it was someone you were standing next to, cheering. I am going to go and find a slower wheel.
The decision
It was not me. But I did not stop it, and that is a firing all the same. Go and find your slower wheel, Odalys. I will stay here with my collapsed bell of a pot and think about what I have done.
A firing all the same. Ring something for me on the way down, Ottilie. Goodnight.

The date
First impressions
Ottilie bursts in, loud and clay-spattered: "Right! Hello! Sorry, I am loud, it is the bells." Odalys dryly replies that "Stand" is usually said to a drifting lift, then asks how Ottilie got up to the fourth floor. Quick volleys, both sizing each other up.
The challenge
Ottilie admits she always takes the stairs and calls lifts boxes on ropes, then adds "I am sure your lifts are lovely." The pot collapses quietly on the wheel. Odalys corrects her to "Three thousand one hundred and twelve" and says someone held the close button as she ran for it. She stands and removes her apron, ready to leave.
The decision
Ottilie takes responsibility without owning it: "It was not me. But I did not stop it." Odalys says a firing all the same, then heads for the stairs, leaving Ottilie alone with the collapsed pot and an alarming silence.
The twist
The lift is never the real problem: Ottilie's shouted hello and the collapsing pot tip the evening over, and Odalys chooses the stairs rather than another ride with her.
The finale
Odalys walks out and down the stairs, rejecting Ottilie, who is left alone at the wheel. Neither wants another date, and the evening ends in a clean, polite disaster.
Ending: A disaster
Who gets rejected? Ottilie Langstrom
The box score
How this was scored
A disaster: Odalys's dealbreaker tripped, trust 42 and chemistry 46 finished low, awkwardness finished at 51, and that outweighed attraction 66. The weak spot was awkwardness: how stiff it got. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness and 11 for the tripped dealbreaker. This one came out −12.4 against an ordinary date: friends needs +6.5, a second date +12.0.
“A firing all the same. Ring something for me on the way down, Ottilie. Goodnight.”
