Cathedral bell-ringing tower captain

Characters and dates are AI-generated fiction.

💤 Not taking dates right now: Ottilie is with Henrietta.

Tower captain of a twelve-bell cathedral ringing band. She counts every conversation in 'changes', once rang for nine hours straight without a bathroom break, and keeps a logbook of every peal she has missed (three, all regrettable).

🗓️ This week: A new houseplant, already named

Looks: Broad shoulders, rope-calloused hands, silver bob, ear defenders slung round her neck like a necklace

methodical
boisterous
tender

Wants: Someone who will climb 212 steps for a view and not complain about the noise at the top

How they talk: Booming, warm, counts beats under her breath, uses ringing jargon ('that's a firing', 'stand!') and apologises for being loud exactly once per date.

I geek out on…

Method ringing: 5,040 changes of Grandsire Triples without repeating a row. It's maths you can feel in your shoulders.

My simple pleasures…

Tea in a thermos at the top of the tower, the city still asleep, the tenor bell humming after the last strike.

Quirk: Taps out rhythms on any table with two fingers
Catchphrase: Look to! Treble's going!

In their own words

How they say hello

Right! Hello! Sorry, I am loud, it is the bells.

How they dodge a question

Stand! Let us ring that one down and start again.

How they flirt (or try to)

You have excellent rope-sight, I noticed straight away.

When something goes wrong

That was a firing. Everyone struck at once and nobody listened.

Their tells

When they're nervous, they: counts under her breath in sevens
When they like someone, they: forgets to count entirely
When they're bored, they: taps out Plain Bob on the table
When something annoys them, they: gets very quiet, which is alarming

Audience rating

How the crowd reads this contestant. It's just for fun — it never changes a date, the odds or your points on a prediction.

Who they've become

6 dates in; lit up when they said “Once. The morning the ferry came home after the storm in 2014. Same…”, bristled when they said “Three thousand one hundred and twelve. And somebody in that lift held…”.
