What they want
Odalys Brandt-Nwosu is looking for someone who can keep up with her dry wit and stay curious about the odd things she loves, like wind and weather.

Nell Abiodun is hoping to find someone who will ask real follow-up questions and turn her rehearsed facts into an actual conversation.

First impressions
The instructions say 'two people, twenty minutes.' We've been at this for forty, and I'm fairly sure that diagram is for a different tent. I'm Odalys. I launch weather balloons for the council, so I'm used to things going wrong right on schedule. Your pockets are full of paper.
Hello. I'm Nell. It's not a diagram for a different tent, it's the right tent upside down, which is somehow worse. The paper is index cards, facts I'd be embarrassed to forget. Balloons, though: when one goes wrong on schedule, what does wrong actually look like?
Wrong looks like a balloon that goes up beautifully, swells to the size of a house, then bursts at the wrong altitude because the wind had other plans. Mostly it's wind. Wind is the real villain. Now, the index cards. Give me one. I'll guess whether it's embarrassing.
Card one: Roman soldiers shared leather tents in groups of eight, called a contubernium. Embarrassing? Only if you'd like a second card. Also, it's eight, not ten, which I'd like noted.
The challenge
Eight, noted, and I'm keeping it. Not embarrassing, just the sort of fact that sits quietly in your head until someone asks about Roman tents. Here's my question: launches happen at dawn, when the wind is calmest.
Eight, yes. Thank you. I'm pleased in the way a person gets when someone writes down a number I cared about. Dawn launches, though: do you go out in the dark to meet the balloon, or does it wait for you? The wind is calmest then, and I've been wondering why it would be.
The ground cools overnight, so the air sitting on it goes still and settles into layers. It's stillest just before the sun starts stirring things up. So yes, I'm usually out in a cold field in the dark, waiting, and the balloon doesn't wait for me.
Good answer. Now a second question, which I'm told is how you get the full tour. Do you like the cold field itself, or is it only the balloon at the end that makes it worth it?
The decision
The field, mostly. The balloon is the punchline, but the field is where I actually spend my time. Frost on the grass, the sky going from black to grey, nobody else awake. I'd happily sit in it without a balloon at all. Also, I've started birdwatching this week.
Birdwatching, this week. I'm not surprised, you have the look of someone who stands very still and waits for things. I have a card on swifts, but I'll only give it to you if you ask what they do at dusk.
Fine, I'll ask. What do swifts do at dusk? I've only got one pigeon on my list so far, and I'd like to know what I'm up against.
Right. At dusk they gather in noisy parties over rooftops, dozens at once, screaming past each other. Then, slowly, they climb high, and some stay aloft for months on end. Pigeons don't get a comparison like that. Write it in the ledger.

The date
First impressions
Act 1: Odalys and Nell meet at the tent, which the instructions have failed to explain. Odalys jokes about being used to things going wrong on schedule. Nell, pushing her glasses up, offers index cards of facts and asks what a balloon failure looks like. Odalys answers that wind is the real villain and asks for a card.
The challenge
Act 2: Nell gives her a card on Roman tents, insisting on eight, not ten. Odalys writes 'eight' in her ledger and asks about dawn launches. Nell asks a follow-up about why the wind is calmest then, and Odalys explains the cooling ground and the waiting in cold fields in the dark.
The decision
Act 3: Nell asks a second question, whether Odalys likes the cold field itself. Odalys admits she would sit in it without a balloon at all and mentions her new birdwatching. Nell offers a swift card, only if Odalys asks, and Odalys does. Nell gives a vivid account of swifts and hands the ledger back.
The twist
Odalys admits she has only one pigeon on her birdwatching list, and Nell's swift facts turn the rain-drenched date into a shared hobby.
The finale
The tent is still unbuilt as the rain eases, and Odalys and Nell pack up together, both enjoying the evening. They leave as just friends, having agreed they would like to meet again to talk about swifts.
Ending: Just friends

The box score
How this was scored
Just friends: warm enough (chemistry 70), but trust 51 never got there. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +11.5 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0.
