What they want
Odalys Penhallow wants to find out whether this stranger will ask a real follow-up question about the things she loves, and whether she can keep up.

Nell Abiodun wants to find out whether this stranger will ask a second question, and whether they can handle her getting carried away about history.

First impressions
That couple has finished four of my sentences since we sat down, so I'm going to ask you something before they get to it. What's in all the notes? I've counted at least three pockets from here, and I'd like to know what kind of person keeps a filing system in her cardigan.
Oh, good, you noticed the pockets. Floor plans, mostly. And a list of which marble bust is staring at which door, because they never look where I'd expect. Also I counted five interruptions, not four, so you're not the only one keeping score. What was the fifth one going to be?
The fifth was going to be 'they're so well matched,' and that couple would have finished it for me. Floor plans of what, though? One building, or the whole town?
One building, mostly the east wing. The basement plans are Roman, which the council owns, so strictly speaking it's the whole town. Sorry, that was a detour. Ask me the second question and I'll stop. Have you ever been down into the cellar of anything old?
The challenge
Twice, both for work. A Victorian culvert under the old tannery, catalogue number 0417. I was down there four hours with a torch that kept dying, and I came up with a very good cover and one cold I've been pretending I don't have. Roman basements are a different thing.
Four hours with a dying torch and you came out with a cold. That's a very Victorian souvenir. Did the torch die before you found the cover, or after? The order matters for the story, and I'd like to know which of you gave up first.
The torch died after. I found the cover, sat with it for ten minutes like an idiot, and then the torch gave up, which I took as a hint. So the record says I didn't give up first. The cover did, technically. Which bust is looking at which door right now?
Ah, you've caught me being a bit pleased. Nobody has asked me a second question in ages, which is a sad thing to admit on a first date. The nearest bust is a second-century emperor, and his eyes are on the fire exit, the one nobody uses.
The decision
Then I'll make it a habit. Third question, since she's clearly generous with them: is the fire exit unused because it's locked, or because nobody can be bothered to find the key? An emperor staring at it suggests he knows something the council doesn't.
Locked, I'd guess, but I'm biased. I was shut out of my own building twice this week, so I have strong views on keys. The spare for that door is meant to hang on a board in the office, and the board is in the wrong room. Did the emperor come with a plaque?
No plaque. The base says 'Emperor, probably,' which is more honest than most of the labels in my filing cabinet. Sorry about the shut-out, by the way. Two lockouts in a week is a bad run, and I'd know, I've been locked out of a tannery culvert.
Thank you for the emperor's verdict. Nobody has ever called a label more honest than a cabinet before. Are you leaving, or is that stand an invitation? I can give you the short tour of the east wing. There isn't a short version, but I'll pretend.

First impressions
Act 1: Odalys Penhallow sizes up Nell Abiodun's bulging cardigan pockets and asks what kind of person keeps a filing system in them. Nell admits to floor plans and a list of marble busts, then counts five interruptions from the couple, not four.
The challenge
Act 2: Odalys describes a four-hour culvert job with a dying torch and a cold she is pretending she doesn't have. Nell launches into a question about which of them gave up first. Then a long, awkward silence settles over the table, and Odalys breaks it by asking which bust is looking at which door, which gets Nell gushing about an emperor watching the unused fire exit.
The decision
Act 3: Odalys asks whether the exit is locked or simply forgotten, and Nell mentions being shut out of her own building twice this week. Odalys apologises for the lockouts and stands, cardigan still closed. Nell asks whether that stand is an invitation and offers the short tour of the east wing, which doesn't exist.
The twist
The two bond over a locked fire exit and a lost key, and the emperor's stare turns out to be the only thing either of them expected to be noticed by.
The finale
Odalys and Nell leave the table together as friends, both eager to meet again, while the smug couple is left to finish each other's sentences alone.
Ending: Just friends
Who leaves the date first? They leave together
The box score
How this was scored
Just friends: warm enough (chemistry 73), but trust 47 never got there. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +15.3 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0.
“Nobody has ever called a label more honest than a cabinet before.”
