First impressions

MU
Moss Underbridge

Juniper Vale, good evening. You arrived looking like you had walked out of a storm and decided it could wait outside. I tend to ask about coats: I catalogue lost things, so a garment that size makes me wonder whose it was first. Yours, or borrowed from someone who lost it?

Juniper Vale

Borrowed, I think. It was hanging in the stairwell when I moved in, and nobody came back for it. The wind's been doing that thing all week where it sounds like someone climbing the stairs. Do you catalogue things people never return? Or only the mittens?

pulls the collar up · curious
MU

Both, though the mittens break my heart a little. Everything the fens have swallowed since 1814 passes through my desk. I don't throw anything away, I keep it damp and labelled in case someone comes back. Has anyone come up your stairs asking for the coat? Or only the wind?

Only the wind, so far. Though the left sleeve moved on its hook once, and the wind has no hands. Tell me honestly, Moss. A bog that keeps what it swallows and labels it. Ghost, or very tidy hole?

The challenge

MU
Moss Underbridge

Ghost, Juniper Vale. A tidy hole is only what a ghost calls itself when it would rather not be asked questions. Did the sleeve move toward you, or away? I would like that noted accurately, for the record.

Juniper Vale

Toward. It leaned out, like it wanted a look at whoever was on the stairs. Noted accurately. Your lanyard is full of labelled keys. What's the one you just set down? Something from the fens, or something that's still waiting for its door?

holds still, listening · intrigued
MU

That is the one that still waits, then. A brass key from the Mere, 1851, the year they drained it. The house it opened went under that same spring. I could not return it and I could not bin it, so it hangs here with the date and the water written on its tag.

gurgles softly · wistful
Juniper Vale portrait

A house that went under the same spring, and you kept its key on a string. Most people would have thrown that in the fen. Did it ever open anything after it was drowned? Or did it just wait, the way you say, with the date written on it.

leans closer over the table · rapt

The decision

MU
Moss Underbridge

It never opened anything after the door went under, Juniper. I tried it twice in the back room, against the cabinet of drowned doors. Nothing. Do you always go straight for the question that hurts, or only with people you've decided are worth it?

guarded

Juniper Vale

Only with people who keep a drowned key on a string. That's a short list. Meanwhile, lane eleven just got a strike and the man on it is glaring at us like we owe him a score. Did the cabinet ever give anything back, Moss? Or is it just doors that don't answer?

glances at the lanes · wary
MU

You answered my question sideways, the way a cat answers a closed door. The cabinet gave nothing back, and you would rather ask about the lanes. I catalogue what people leave behind. You have left yours on the floor.

the air goes damp · disappointed
Juniper Vale portrait

Left on the floor, am I. Fine. My lighthouse has a lamp that sticks in fog, and I don't go down to fix it until someone asks. Is that what you're doing with the lanyard, Moss? Waiting to be asked?

The date

First impressions

Act 1: Moss Underbridge greets Juniper Vale with a formal "Good evening" and asks about her storm coat, wondering whose it was first. Juniper says it was borrowed from the stairwell, where nobody came back for it, and asks whether Moss catalogues mittens too.

The challenge

Act 2: Juniper says the coat's left sleeve moved on its hook, and asks whether Moss is a ghost or a very tidy hole. Moss sets down a brass key from the Mere, dated 1851, kept because the house it opened went under that spring. Juniper asks whether it ever opened anything again.

The decision

Act 3: Moss says it tried the key twice against the cabinet of drowned doors, and nothing happened. Juniper glances at lane eleven and asks about the cabinet instead. Moss says she answered sideways and that she has left her own things on the floor. Juniper replies that her lighthouse lamp sticks in fog until someone asks, and asks whether Moss is waiting to be asked too.

The twist

Juniper's lighthouse lamp turns the conversation back on Moss, and Moss's gentle accusation of evasion makes the evening cool fast.

The finale

Moss declines a second date, and Juniper declines one too, so the evening ends with both of them turning away from each other, with the bowling pins still crashing on lane twelve.

Ending: A disaster

The box score

Chemistry46-4
Attraction56+8
Trust33-12
Awkwardness56+16
How this was scored

A disaster: Moss's dealbreaker tripped, trust 33 and chemistry 46 finished low, awkwardness finished at 56. The weak spot was awkwardness: how stiff it got. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness and 11 for the tripped dealbreaker. This one came out −19.2 against an ordinary date: friends needs +6.5, a second date +12.0.

“You have left yours on the floor.”
