📍 A hot air balloon drifting off course
A hot air balloon basket drifting off course over the countryside, with a pilot who will not stop talking about wind.
First impressions
Sable. Hello, you absolute weather event. Ten minutes ago I'd have called this a bad idea, but the glitter is holding up better than the pilot's theory of wind. He's said crosswind eleven times. I'm keeping count, because counting is what I do with empty rooms.
Eleven?! Okay, rival chefs, crosswind counting contest, and I'm in. Whoever says it next buys the other a party hat. Also, empty rooms? Nell, that sentence is sad and I'm fixing it with confetti. Yes before you hear the plan?
Yes. I'm witnessing it. He's said twelve now, I'm counting out loud because you dared me to. I won't take a party hat from a rival who sprinkles glitter on the sky. The busts downstairs never once asked me for confetti, so it can wait. Hello, Sable.
HELLO! Thirteen! He said it again, so Nell owes me a hat, rival chef. And 'sprinkles glitter on the sky' is going on my stall sign, in capitals. Idea, no plan attached: we serenade him with a crosswind song until he changes the subject. Yes? Yes. Now, the counting.
The challenge
🎬 Someone connected to one of their pasts turns up unannounced.
Thirteen, yes, Sable, I'll give you that one. I won't sing, though. He deserves a respectful silence, he's clearly taking the wind very seriously. Rival chef, what's on your stall? Is the glitter in the dish, or only on the sign?
Sparkle-based cuisine, rival chef! Edible, mostly. Notebook away, or I confiscate it for a party hat. Also, you counted to thirteen for me. Nobody has ever done that. Yes, I'll taste whatever you're cooking. Yes before the plan!
Sparkle-based cuisine. Right. I can't judge that without a sample, so I'll reserve my verdict. The notebook stays where it is. It's a crosswind ledger, not a recipe book. Counting to thirteen wasn't a favour, I just can't leave a count unfinished. Nobody counted for you?
Nobody counted for me, no. Usually people just ask me to stop narrating my own snacks. So here, sample my signature dish: a cracker shaped like a tiny confetti cannon, flavoured with orange zest and mischief.
The decision
A confetti cannon, in cracker form. Orange zest, and mischief, which I can't measure, so I'll allow it. Hold on. [bites] The zest arrives first, then the mischief turns up late, like a fire alarm in an empty wing. Verdict: wonderful and frankly unreasonable.
Unreasonable?! Nell, that's the best review I've ever gotten, and I'm framing it. Put it in your ledger in capitals. Also, you're clutching that notebook like it owes you money. Honest question: what count are you keeping right now, the one you haven't finished?
Ah. Honest answer: it's a tally of follow-up questions. People ask one thing, I answer, and they say 'interesting' and the room goes quiet. You just asked a second one, so I'm marking you up a point. Don't get used to it. I might lose count.
A point for me! And for the record, I would never say 'interesting.' I'd say 'HAT.' Okay, follow-up, no confetti attached: when the room goes quiet, what do you wish somebody had said?
The notebook Nell kept guarding is not a crosswind ledger or a recipe book but a tally of follow-up questions, and Sable has just earned a point.
Nell steps out of the basket first, notebook still tucked into her cardigan, and both leave wanting a fourth date. They plan to meet at Sable's stall for another tasting, with no day or time set.
Ending: A fourth date
Who leaves the date first? Nell Abiodun
🎤 The room's question for the challenge: Dare them: say the most honest thing you've thought tonight.
The room called it Undeniable chemistry. The characters chose A fourth date.
🎲 The audience hit the chaos button: 🔥 Turn up the heat. In that timeline it ends A fourth date.
Chemistry 0 · Attraction +19 · Trust +4 · Awkwardness -8
A non-canon “what if” — the real ending above still stands. The engine just replayed the crowd's curveball.
