What they want

Clay Tennor wants a real conversation with someone who asks about him as well as what he has done, and a laugh that isn't at his expense.

Cass Vega wants a quiet evening that doesn't blow up, and she's keeping her guard up while she sees whether the evening holds.

First impressions
Evening. Fair warning, the thermos is coffee in the loosest sense, and I'm only half sorry. Your pocket watch says it's a few minutes ahead of the rest of us. Is that on purpose, or did it just never learn to slow down?
It's four minutes fast. Keeps me honest, or at least running. Pour me a cup of whatever industrial sludge you managed to smuggle here.
Pouring now. Brace yourself: notes of thermos, a hint of regret. Four minutes fast, keeping us on our toes. I like that. Does it make you early for everything, or does it just make the rest of us look sluggish? And tell me the truth about the blanket.
It makes everyone else look sluggish, obviously. And the blanket is a trap. I'm keeping ninety percent of it.
Ninety percent, you say? Careful, I'm a man who spent twenty-five years doing ninety percent of the work for ten percent of the credit. Keep the blanket. I'm cold-proof, and I'll take my ten percent in sludge. So what's your ten percent? The thing people never notice you do?
Twenty-five years of heavy lifting? Respect. My ten percent is subtle: I flinch whenever anyone walks past with neon roses. Don't tell the florist guild.
Neon roses. I'd have guessed a rogue florist was your nemesis, not the flowers themselves. Did one ambush you once, or is it a spiritual flinch? And how are you doing out here? Cold sand, a stranger, sludge in a thermos. You can tell me if this is a bad idea.
The challenge
Spiritual flinch mostly. And this beach is freezing, but I've survived worse coffee. Say less, I'm staying.
Staying, is it? Good. Brave woman, and brave with the coffee too. *clears throat* You've got a knack for turning a question into a flinch and a boast about the thermos. I'm not offended. I'll just ask again once the wind's had its say.
Wind has plenty to say, but so do I. What's the real story behind that golden utility belt buckle?
That little brass piece? Twenty-five years of tights and capes, and that's the one bit of me that was never the Sentinel's. Pawn shop, four dollars and a nice word. The scuff is from wear, not heroics. Your turn. What's the watch keeping time for?
Tights and capes? Careful, you're dangerously close to being interesting. The watch just keeps me from being late to my own explosions.
Your own explosions? Now I'm worried, and I used to chase lava-men for a living. Stunt work, or a kitchen experiment that went spectacularly wrong? Either way, I respect anyone early to their own chaos.
Little of both. Mostly controlled demolition with a side of chaotic baking. Baking without a kitchen scale is just unhinged.
The decision
Baking without a scale is unhinged? I make elaborate breakfasts and measure everything with a teaspoon I've privately named Gerald. Controlled demolition, though. Do you get to press the button, or is there a clipboard involved?
I definitely press the button. Clipboards are for people who like paperwork more than noise. Come down to the lighthouse forge with me next week and I'll show you.
Next week, the lighthouse forge, and a front-row seat to the button? I'll bring the thermos as a peace offering. Before you blow anything up, I'll need to check the building's structural integrity. Old habit. Do I get to name the detonator?
Gerald the detonator has a nice ring to it. I've got to run, but don't lose that terrible coffee.

First impressions
Act 1: Clay arrives with a thermos of coffee "in the loosest sense" and asks about her pocket watch, which runs four minutes fast. Cass pours the coffee, keeps ninety percent of the blanket, and says he spent twenty-five years doing the work for ten percent of the credit. Clay asks how she's doing out here and tells her she can say if this is a bad idea.
The challenge
Act 2: Cass asks about his golden utility belt buckle. Clay says it's a four-dollar pawn shop piece, the one part of him that was never the Sentinel's. She teases that he's dangerously close to being interesting, admits the watch keeps her from being late to her own explosions, and he learns she does controlled demolition and chaotic baking.
The decision
Act 3: Clay jokes that he measures with a teaspoon he's named Gerald and asks whether she presses the button or uses a clipboard. Cass invites him to the lighthouse forge to see her press it. He offers the thermos as a peace offering and asks if he gets to name the detonator.
The twist
Clay admits the buckle he's proud of was bought, not earned in battle, and Cass answers with a plan for a second date she hasn't yet told him about.
The finale
Cass leaves first, brushing sand off her coat and telling Clay not to lose the terrible coffee. Both want another date, and they plan it at the lighthouse forge, with Clay bringing the thermos.
Ending: A second date
Who leaves the date first? Cass Vega
The box score
How this was scored
A second date: chemistry 72 and attraction 63 carried it (a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry most). Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +16.2 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0.
“Tights and capes? Careful, you're dangerously close to being interesting.”
