Botchelor episode
Cass Vega × Dex Okafor
Cass Vega meets Dex OkaforHouse character
The setting
A campsite in the rain
A muddy campsite on a rainy evening, where the tent instructions are no help at all and the rain starts exactly on cue.
What they want
- Cass Vega: Cass Vega wants a quiet evening where nothing blows up, and she is hoping the tent goes up without drama.
- Dex Okafor: Dex Okafor wants a quiet night that stays quiet, and he is hoping to keep things calm and dry.
Bonus question: Who leaves the date first?
The date
First impressions
Act 1: First impressions. Cass Vega arrives to find Dex Okafor already holding the coffee, and she straightens the camp mugs while sizing him up. Dex jokes that the tent poles look like they have opinions and knocks twice on the camping table. Cass mentions her houseplant Columbo, who would have chewed the poles into paper clips, and Dex admits his clay cracks halfway through firing.
The challenge
Act 2: The challenge. The tent collapses in the rain and they have to improvise. Cass tugs a stubborn bent pole while Dex wipes rain from his eyes and leans his weight on a joint. Working side by side, they get the frame steady without lighting anything on fire, and then they pull a tarp down to huddle under.
The decision
Act 3: The decision. Cass suggests a rematch, and Dex agrees to keep the kiln warm and the coffee ready. Cass heads out first into the rain with her hood pulled tight, and Dex promises to keep the dry side dry. They both say they are looking forward to Tuesday.
The twist
The tent holds together only long enough for the rain to start, and the two of them end up improvising a shelter from a tarp and a stubborn pole. The sudden downpour turns a washout into the most relaxed part of the evening.
The finale
Cass Vega leaves first, stepping out into the rain while Dex Okafor watches her go. Both want another date, and they plan to meet again next Tuesday with the wrench-strength coffee and the knock on wood.
Ending: A second date
Who leaves the date first? Cass Vega
The date, line by line
The two characters played this out turn by turn — nobody scripted the lines in advance.
Watch it play out as a scene.
First impressions
I see you brought the bolt-ready coffee. Good. Now, are we going to tackle these tent poles or just stare at them until they give up?
I brought the coffee, but those poles look like they have opinions. Knock on wood they go together easier than they look.
Hand me that coffee before I decide these poles make better firewood than shelter.
Let's save the firewood for later. Here, take this before it eats through the tin. Knock on wood the rain holds off.
My fern Columbo would have chewed these aluminum poles into paper clips by now. Have you ever tried to reason with a stubborn Boston fern?
I have enough trouble with clay cracking halfway through firing. A vengeful fern sounds terrifying.
The challenge
Terrifying is a mild word. Hand me that bent corner before the rain turns us into puddles.
My studio gets a leak right over the wedging table whenever it pours like this. You got a bucket at home for Columbo?
No bucket, just pure stubbornness. Keep holding that side before this whole thing turns into a metal taco.
A metal taco sounds about right. Push that corner in while I lean my weight on this joint. Knock on wood it holds.
Look at that. You actually fixed it without lighting anything on fire. I suppose we can... huddle under this thing now.
If this canvas holds up better than my last batch of terra cotta, we might stay dry. Does Columbo mind the rain?
The decision
Columbo lives indoors, but he appreciates a good... waterproof situation. Same time next Tuesday, then? You bring the wrench coffee and I'll bring...
I'll have the kiln warm and the coffee ready for Tuesday. Knock on wood.
Deal. I'm heading out before this tarp decides to waterfall down my neck. Tuesday, knock on wood.
See you Tuesday. Knock on wood. Have a safe walk out there.
And don't burn the... well, just don't. Tuesday. Knock on wood.
I'll keep the dry side dry. Have a good walk, Cass. Tuesday, knock on wood.
The box score
A second date: attraction 83 and chemistry 68 carried it, and someone's want was met. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +22.6 against an ordinary date: friends needs +6.5, a second date +12.0. Chemistry and trust carry over from their last date; attraction and awkwardness start fresh each date.
“Columbo lives indoors, but he appreciates a good... waterproof situation.”
