Botchelor episode
Cass Vega × Nell Abiodun
Cass Vega meets Nell AbiodunHouse character
The setting
A corner café that closes in an hour
A cramped corner café on a rainy weeknight, one hour before closing, with chairs being stacked on tables around them and the staff hovering near the cake counter.
What they want
- Cass Vega: Cass Vega wants a calm, easy evening over tea, with some teasing banter and no drama.
- Nell Abiodun: Nell Abiodun wants to talk about the things she loves and find out whether Cass asks follow-up questions.
Bonus question: Who leaves the date first?
The date
First impressions
Act 1: First impressions. Cass arrives on time in a too-big vintage suit, checks her pocket watch, and says, "You're on time. I like that." Nell starts with a nervous rehearsed greeting, then warms up when Cass asks about her favourite exhibit. The two size each other up over tea, both sharper than they look.
The challenge
Act 2: The challenge. As the chairs go up, Nell dares Cass to light a sparkler on the leftover cake the staff are about to bin and sing for the closing crowd. Cass's teasing smile slips. She goes quiet, then has to decide whether to risk it. The sparkler hisses, Cass flinches hard, a chair clatters over, and the room turns to stare.
The decision
Act 3: The decision. Cass recovers with a dry "Cool. Cool cool cool. This is fine." Nell apologises for the stunt and insists it was historically sound. They laugh at the mess, then head out into the rain together, neither quite sure they want another evening like it.
The twist
The dare Nell proposed to shake things up turns the quiet evening into a sparkler-fuelled scene, and Cass, the former demolition expert, is the one who ends up flinching most.
The finale
The two leave the café together into the rain, sharing an umbrella and a laugh over the wreckage. Both agree the evening was a disaster, and both make clear they do not want another date.
Ending: A disaster
Who leaves the date first? They leave together
The date, line by line
The two characters played this out turn by turn — nobody scripted the lines in advance.
Watch it play out as a scene.
First impressions
Okay, you're not late, which already puts you ahead of most people I've met here. Those notes in your pockets, are they for me or for a shopping list?
Mostly facts. Sorry. And those chairs aren't vintage, they're reproductions, bentwood, but close. I write things down on nights so I don't lose my place when I'm giving the tour to empty rooms. Did you know the busts in the east wing are older than their plinths?
Busts older than their plinths? That's a grudge I'd like to hear more about. Do the empty rooms ever ask you anything back, or do you just run the tour and hope nobody's listening?
Not yet. The rooms mostly just echo back the last word, which I count as rude. Your watch is four minutes fast, isn't it? Is that on purpose, so you're never late, or does it just run ahead of you?
The challenge
On purpose. It cost me a train once, so now I'm early to everything and sit in doorways pretending I'm not waiting. Your busts have a grudge against their plinths, and I'm still stuck on the echo rooms being rude. Do you ever answer back when they repeat you?
Once. I told a Roman senator's bust his nose was a later addition. He didn't argue, so I count it as a win. Cass, did the train leave without you, or did you get on the wrong one? And my dare: you wait in that doorway while I give you the full tour of the wine label. No skipping.
Wrong one, actually. It was headed to a goat town, which my mother still thinks is a fine place to end up. Fine, the doorway. But the chairs are going up around us, so keep the wine label tour short, Nell. I'm not sitting on a bentwood reproduction and pretending it's vintage.
The decision
You haven't asked me one question about me this whole time. I'm not annoyed, just accurate about it. It's closing, though, and I'm walking that way. Want to share the door?
Fair. I spent the whole time trying to win and didn't ask you a thing. I don't think we'd make a quiet evening, and that's what I came for. Share the door, though. I'm not leaving you to the chairs.
Fine, you take the door. Before we go, what's the goat town called? I'd like the full name, not the short version.
The box score
A disaster: trust 43 and attraction 48 finished low, and that outweighed chemistry 65. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +5.6 against an ordinary date: friends needs +6.5, a second date +12.0.
“Historically speaking, it's very fine.”
Secret agendas & the producer
The producer's act-2 situation: A dare.
- Cass Vega: Find someone genuinely funny
- Nell Abiodun: Try something outside the comfort zone
