First impressions
Hi. I'm Nell. I walk the east wing of a museum after dark, so the busts and I have a lot of silent conversations. Your coat looks like it's survived a few arguments with the sea. Storm coat, or just a very committed one? What's your night like?
Storm coat. It was my uncle's, and he was a very committed man. Nights are mostly the lamp, the log, and the gulls, who I'm fairly sure are judging me. Busts, though. Does Nell ever hear them answer back, or do they just stare like they know something?
They don't answer back. Sorry, that's me correcting something nobody asked about when I'm nervous. But the Roman senator by the fire door has a chipped nose that makes him look like he's about to disagree.
Nervous corrections are fine. I make a lot of them to the gulls, and they've never once corrected me back. Tell me about the senator. Has he ever been facing a different way when she came back around? Only a little different. Maybe just the nose.
The challenge
Yes. Twice. The cleaners rotate him when the lamp glare gets bad, and he comes back a few degrees off. I've logged it, which is probably more than anyone asked for. Sorry.
Logged. Twice. Nobody tracks a senator's rotation unless they suspect he's moving on his own. I kept a gull's arrival times one whole winter, so I'm not one to talk. The chairs are going up, which gives us a short window.
Short window. Then I'll make it count. If that's a dare, I accept, though the Romans regulated bakers very strictly, so whatever is in that case is technically a violation. Sorry. Which one is the worst?
That one. Bottom shelf, the brown knot crusted in salt. The baker calls it a sea biscuit. Nobody has finished one since March. Apologies are not needed for the Romans. Bite, and I'll tell you what the last person said.
The decision
Historically, that biscuit has survived a lot. Before I bite: what did the last person say? Word for word, if you remember it. And is the salt the recipe, or did the sea get in there somehow?
Word for word: "Is that a biscuit or a warning?" Then he went out into the rain. Salt is the recipe, probably. The sea insists it helped. Eat it, Nell. Then come back next week and help me count the cellar steps under my keeper's room. There's one more than the plans say.

The date
First impressions
Nell introduces herself as a museum night guard and asks about Juniper's storm coat. Juniper says it was her uncle's, talks about the gulls, and asks whether Nell hears the busts answer back. Nell corrects herself mid-answer and mentions the Roman senator by the fire door.
The challenge
The senator's rotation becomes the subject: Nell has logged him moving twice, and Juniper says nobody tracks that unless they suspect he's moving on his own. With the chairs going up, Juniper dares Nell to eat the bottom-shelf sea biscuit that nobody has finished since March.
The decision
Nell asks what the last person said about it, and Juniper repeats it word for word: "Is that a biscuit or a warning?" Nell picks up the biscuit, asks whether the salt is the recipe, and prepares to bite.
The twist
The dare turns out to be a test of curiosity rather than nerve, and Nell's questions about the biscuit impress Juniper more than the bite does.
The finale
Nell eats the biscuit. Juniper gathers her storm coat and leaves first, inviting Nell back to help count the cellar steps under her keeper's room, which have one more step than the plans say. Both want another date, and they plan one.
Ending: A second date
Who leaves the date first? Juniper Vale
The box score
How this was scored
A second date: chemistry 69 and attraction 64 carried it (a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry most). Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +13.1 against an ordinary date: friends needs +6.5, a second date +12.0.
“Nobody tracks a senator's rotation unless they suspect he's moving on his own.”
