Botchelor episode
Chud the crusher × Sable Quist
Chud the crusher meets Sable QuistHouse character
The setting
A beginner surf lesson in cold water
A beginner surf lesson in cold grey water on a windy morning, with wetsuits a size wrong and an instructor who speaks only in wave metaphors.
What they want
- Chud the crusher: Chud the crusher wants a wild, fun time with Sable and hopes the chemistry will keep the energy high after the lesson.
- Sable Quist: Sable Quist wants to keep the fun going and see whether Chud can keep up with her chaos, while saying yes before hearing the plan.
Bonus question: Who leaves the date first?
The date
First impressions
Act 1: First impressions. Chud the crusher sizes up Sable's party hat over her wetsuit and calls it a whole itinerary. Sable bets him fifty imaginary dollars he can't face-plant into a wave without yelling, and he counters that he'll take the bet if she catches him when he resurfaces. She dares him to carry her to the truck with forty hats on his head, and he hoists her up, grinning.
The challenge
Act 2: The challenge. Sable gets straight to the point: 'Are you seeing anyone else, Chud?' Chud dodges with a joke about the dachshund and the blender, then admits that his life is football drills and database errors, and that no one else makes him forget his own code like she does. Sable teases him about his place sounding like a warm trap, and he says he'll lock the door behind them. The question lands and the banter softens.
The decision
Act 3: The decision. Sable pulls him toward the car and says they're going to get tacos, as the tide rolls in behind them.
The twist
The question Sable asks is the one Chud can't dodge: he admits he's been close to no one else, and she's the only one he wants to take out. The big talk fades into easy laughter about tacos and car rides.
The finale
Chud and Sable leave the surf lesson together, sharing a laugh and a plan for tacos. They agree to plan another date, with both of them wanting more.
Ending: A second date
Who leaves the date first? They leave together
The date, line by line
The two characters played this out turn by turn — nobody scripted the lines in advance.
Watch it play out as a scene.
First impressions
A party hat over a wetsuit? You really brought the whole itinerary to the freezing ocean, captain.
Party hat over wetsuit is the only fashion standard that matters! I bet you fifty imaginary dollars you can't face-plant into that freezing wave without yelling!
Fifty dollars is steep, captain, but I'll take that bet if you catch me when I resurface.
Challenge accepted! If you don't turn into an ice cube first, I dare you to carry me all the way to the truck with forty hats balanced on your head!
Forty hats and a soaking wet athlete? The parking lot isn't ready for this, captain. Jump on.
If we make it to the truck without dropping a single hat, you owe me tacos!
Tacos are cheap, captain, but the toll for riding my shoulders is paying it right back at my place.
I haven't owned a dining table in six years, but your kitchen island has precisely enough marble for forty-one hats and a blender!
Marble island approved, captain. Just don't blame me when the blender starts demanding equal rent.
Consider that blender served with an eviction notice! If it argues, let us hijack your couch permanently!
The challenge
A permanent couch takeover sounds like a hostile custody battle, but I might let you win.
Are you seeing anyone else, Chud? Besides the dachshund and the blender, obviously.
My entire life right now is just football drills and staring at database errors, and you know it.
Databases don't text you at midnight with fifty margaritas.
Fair point, captain. But none of them make me forget my own code quite like you do. You're the only one I want to take back to my place.
Your place always sounds like a trap, Chud. A very nice, very warm trap.
It's a warm trap, captain. And I'm locking the door behind us.
If you're locking the door, you better hide the keys. You know I'll just find a window.
You'd probably find a way through the chimney, captain. But I'll leave the window unlocked just in case.
The decision
A chimney is ambitious, even for me. Come on, let's go get those tacos.
The box score
A second date: chemistry 88 and attraction 61 carried it (a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry most). Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +29.4 against an ordinary date: friends needs +6.5, a second date +12.0. Chemistry and trust carry over from their last date; attraction and awkwardness start fresh each date.
“Consider that blender served with an eviction notice! If it argues, let us hijack your couch permanently!”
