🍸 Round 1 of 3 at the mixer at a basement jazz bar, one table left: everyone was in one room. Watch the whole night, every table in order.
What they want

Nell Abiodun wants a real conversation with someone who asks good follow-up questions, and she's trying to find out whether this man is genuinely curious about her world.

Armand Valois: Barnaby Quillfeather wants an easygoing evening with someone who won't flinch at his work, and he's keen to see if she can take a joke.

First impressions
Oh. You're here. Good. I was going to pretend I'd only come for the drums. Is that loupe for reading the menu, or are you the kind of man who inspects a cocktail for forgeries?
💭
A loupe at a jazz bar. Either he's serious or he's wonderful, and I'd like to know which.
Strictly for the menu, though I have been known to examine glass eyes with it. Badgers are particular about their eyes. Forgeries are a fair worry in my line of work. Tell me about the uniform, though.
The challenge
The uniform is a navy polo with the museum crest, and the cardigan is because the galleries go cold after midnight. I'm a night guard. You said 'my line of work', though. Which line? Auction houses? Nobody inspects glass eyes for fun.
💭
He caught the 'line of work' and didn't just nod; I want to see if he follows it up.
Taxidermy, I'm afraid. Badgers, mostly, and only those who died of old age. Each one gets a backstory before it gets a glass eye. Do your museum's stuffed things ever give you a turn after midnight, or are they too well behaved to frighten a night guard?
The decision
Never once. Our stuffed things are far too well behaved. The barn owl in the east wing has watched me for nine years, but that's the lighting. Sorry. What goes into a badger's backstory? Is it true, or is it a good story?
💭
He asked me something back, and he actually wants the answer.
Both, I'm afraid. The facts come from the family who brought him in, and the rest is what I'd like to be true. Gerald was born under a hawthorn, got through one hard winter, and retired at fourteen. Is that cheating? Now, your barn owl. Does he have a name?

First impressions
Act 1: Nell arrives flustered and admits she nearly pretended she only came for the drums. Barnaby, loupe in hand, asks whether she inspects cocktails for forgeries. She tugs her cardigan sleeve, and he is charmed by her sudden honesty.
The challenge
Act 2: Barnaby hints at his line of work, taxidermy, and says each badger gets a backstory before its glass eye. Nell fires back with a sharp follow-up: which line of work, exactly? Nobody inspects glass eyes for fun. She presses him, and he has to dodge it gently.
The decision
Act 3: Nell admits the barn owl in her museum has watched her for nine years. She asks whether a badger's backstory is true or just a good story. Barnaby says it's both, with the facts from the family and the rest his wish. He turns the question back to her owl and asks if it has a name.
The twist
Barnaby confesses that the retirement story of his badger Gerald is part fact, part fancy, and Nell is delighted by how openly he admits it. The drummer's solo then drowns out the rest of the evening's chat.
The finale
The countdown ends with Nell and Barnaby agreeing they've had a lovely time as just friends, and Nell is the first to head for the door. Both say they'd happily meet again, perhaps over warm scones.
Ending: Just friends

The box score
How this was scored
Just friends: warm enough (chemistry 75), but trust 41 never got there. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +14.6 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0.
