Botchelor episode
Cass Vega × Dex Okafor
Cass Vega meets Dex OkaforHouse character
The setting
A botanic park before the rain
A botanic park in the minutes before it rains, the sky heavy overhead and nobody willing to mention it. Cass and Dex meet on a wooden bench beside the ferns.
What they want
- Cass Vega: Cass wants a quiet evening that doesn't blow up, and is teasing Dex to see if he's worth another round.
- Dex Okafor: Dex wants a quiet night that stays quiet, and is keeping things easy and careful while he gets to know her again.
Bonus question: Who leaves the date first?
The date
First impressions
Act 1: First impressions. Cass checks her pocket watch and greets Dex with a teasing jab about the bolt-flavored roast. Dex knocks twice on the bench, mentions his thermos, and both trade jokes about napkins for her ferns and the sky. Cass deflects the rain with a Columbo reference.
The challenge
Act 2: The challenge. Cass grabs Dex's sleeve and dares him to race her to the glass dome before the downpour. Dex keeps pace at a steady jog, admits he hasn't sprinted since his last studio gig, and arrives out of breath. Cass brushes rain off a fern leaf and reassures him it didn't blow up.
The decision
Act 3: The decision. Dex wipes his forehead and admits he has seen worse, and Cass suggests they test the thermos again on Tuesday. They agree on a Tuesday plan, link arms, and walk out into the rain together.
The twist
The dare that Cass sprang on him turns out to be a dash through the rain rather than a bomb or a prank, and Dex's nervous build-up gives way to an easy laugh in the glass dome.
The finale
Cass and Dex leave together, stepping out into the rain with a Tuesday plan. Neither rejects the other, and both want another date.
Ending: A second date
Who leaves the date first? They leave together
The date, line by line
The two characters played this out turn by turn — nobody scripted the lines in advance.
Watch it play out as a scene.
First impressions
Look at you, actually on time. Did you bring that bolt-flavored roast, or do I need to inspect your pockets?
Hey. I left the bolts in the grinder, but I brought a thermos. Knock on wood.
A thermos? Careful, Dex, I might start to think you're domestic. Did you remember the extra napkins for my ferns?
I brought enough napkins for an army of ferns. Knock on wood it doesn't pour before we sit down.
That sky's looking heavier by the minute. If Columbo were here, he'd already have his raincoat on. Did you actually leave the clay behind, or are your fingers still a hazard?
Mostly scrubbed clean, though knock on wood I didn't leave any in the thermos. How's Columbo handling the humidity?
The challenge
Columbo's surviving, barely. Come on, before the sky opens up—let's race to the glass dome.
Lead the way. I haven't sprinted since my last studio gig, but I can manage a jog. Do you think Columbo minds the rain?
He's thriving in it. See? I told you we'd make it before it really opens up.
I haven't moved that fast since a director changed the stunt choreography mid-jump. My lungs are definitely feeling it.
You survived. See? I told you it wouldn't blow up. Though honestly, your lungs sound like they've seen worse.
Yeah, definitely seen worse. Mostly back when pyrotechnics were a bit too enthusiastic. Knock on wood.
The decision
Well, pyrotechnics aside, my Tuesday is completely open next week. We should definitely test that thermos again. Knock on wood.
Sounds like a plan. Tuesday works. Knock on wood.
Good. Same time, same wrench-flavored coffee. Knock on wood. Ready to brave the puddles?
Ready. Tuesday works. Knock on wood.
Lead the way, then. Tuesday's yours to ruin, as long as you bring that terrible coffee.
I'll bring the terrible coffee. Does Columbo prefer silence while it pours?
The box score
A second date: chemistry 77 and attraction 69 carried it (a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry most), and someone's want was met. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +20.4 against an ordinary date: friends needs +6.5, a second date +12.0. Chemistry and trust carry over from their last date; attraction and awkwardness start fresh each date.
“You survived. See? I told you it wouldn't blow up.”
