What they want

Marlo Sable: Get a straight answer on why humans share dessert, and find out whether the last bite means something.

Nell Abiodun: Find someone who asks a second follow-up question, and see whether Nell is worth the full tour.

First impressions
Hi. Your notebook is already open, so I'm guessing you take notes too. Quick question before the drummer starts: when you share dessert, do you actually want the last bite, or is that just politeness?
Honestly? I want the last bite, and I would never admit it across a table. Sorry, that's a simple question and I've answered it with a paragraph. Are the diagrams in your notebook something you're working on, or a list of who gets the last bite?
💭
Diagrams, and she asked about dessert first, which is either a test or a real question.
The challenge
Both. The diagrams track the last-bite question, plus a flowchart of who slides the plate across the table. You just gave me a data point I didn't expect. Fascinating. Now, my earring is under that grate. Do you have a torch?
Torch, yes. Battery, one per cent. Sorry, this grate is original Victorian ironwork, and the cellar under it is older than the building. The Romans had cellars here, probably. Anyway. Hesper, can I ask something heavier than an earring?
💭
Too heavy for a grate. I asked anyway, and I'm not sorry yet.
The decision
Ask. Fair warning: I'm terrible at lying, and my notebook is already open. Also, the earring is a loss at this point, so you're getting my full attention. Fascinating, by the way, that you said 'heavier.'
Sorry, the drummer just made the whole room look up. Heavier, then. You write down everything, like you expect to forget it. What's the one line in that notebook you'd rather I didn't read?
💭
She writes like someone who's been waiting to be asked properly, and I want to know what's on that page.

The date
First impressions
Act 1: Hesper opens with a dessert question before the drummer starts. Nell admits she wants the last bite, then apologises for answering with a paragraph and asks about Hesper's notebook diagrams.
The challenge
Act 2: Hesper's earring falls through a Victorian grate, and her phone torch is down to one per cent. Nell says the cellar is older than the building, then asks Hesper something heavier than an earring while angling the light through the grate.
The decision
Act 3: Hesper says she is terrible at lying and her notebook is already open, then writes down Nell's word 'heavier'. Nell glances at the drummer and asks which line in the notebook she would rather Nell didn't read. The drummer's solo ends and the room turns to look.
The twist
The torch dies mid-question, and the drummer's solo is the only light left. Hesper decides the earring is a loss and gives Nell her full attention.
The finale
The drummer's solo collapses into a clatter and the bar empties around them. Hesper and Nell leave together, both still wanting another date, and agree to plan it later with a notebook and a torch.
Ending: A disaster

The box score
How this was scored
A disaster: trust 43 finished low, and that outweighed chemistry 64. The weak spot was awkwardness: how stiff it got. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +5.5 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0.
“Honestly? I want the last bite, and I would never admit it across a table.”

Guess the dealbreaker
Marlo Sable's real dealbreaker was Anyone who leaves their doors unlocked. It shows a catastrophic lack of operational security and general sense.. You didn't guess this one.
