Botchelor episode
Cass Vega × Dex Okafor
Cass Vega meets Dex OkaforHouse character
The setting
A loud retro arcade
A loud retro arcade on a Tuesday evening, where one broken cabinet keeps announcing a winner nobody earned. Cass and Dex have agreed to meet here before heading to a quiet diner down the block.
What they want
- Cass Vega: Cass wants a calm evening that doesn't blow up, with no surprises and no loud noises.
- Dex Okafor: Dex wants a quiet night that stays quiet, and hopes to find someone who can make him laugh.
Bonus question: Who leaves the date first?
The date
First impressions
Act 1: First impressions. Cass opens with 'You brought the earplugs. I told you so.' Dex admits he did, adds that he remembered the diner too, and knocks twice on the counter, hoping it's quieter there. Cass says the arcade racket is still ringing in her ear, and they both agree the earplugs were a good idea.
The challenge
Act 2: The challenge. The broken cabinet blares out another winner, and both are thrown by the noise. Dex jokes about the synth tune stuck in his head and asks whether she's ready for coffee that tastes like a wrench. Cass calls them strictly amateurs at property damage and points them toward the exit before the screen explodes. Dex taps the nearest cabinet and agrees it's time to leave before they owe the arcade a new machine.
The decision
Act 3: The decision. They step out onto the sidewalk together. Dex says to lead the way, since the diner has coffee waiting. Cass answers that they'll see whether the coffee can strip paint. Dex promises the clay will be off his hands by Tuesday and asks if they can meet at the same time next week.
The twist
The one thing the arcade does not make loud is the two of them: the machine's announcements are the only thing that interrupts their easy conversation, and both of them find the quiet they wanted in each other.
The finale
Cass and Dex leave the arcade together, heading for the diner. Both want another date, and they agree to meet again on Tuesday, the same time next week.
Ending: A second date
Who leaves the date first? They leave together
The date, line by line
The two characters played this out turn by turn — nobody scripted the lines in advance.
Watch it play out as a scene.
First impressions
You brought the earplugs. I told you so.
I did. And I remembered the diner too. Knock on wood it's quieter in there than this place.
That arcade racket is still ringing in my ear. Good thing we brought them.
I've still got that synth tune stuck in my head from last time. Ready for some coffee that tastes like a wrench?
The challenge
We are strictly amateurs when it comes to property damage. Let's go before that screen explodes.
Knock on wood. Definitely time to head out before we owe them a new machine.
We just test the limits of the machinery. Let's get outside before it starts flashing.
The decision
Lead the way. That diner's got coffee waiting.
Lead the way. Let's see if that diner's coffee can strip paint.
It definitely will. I'll have the clay off my hands by Tuesday, I promise. Same time?
The box score
A second date: attraction 75 and chemistry 71 carried it, and someone's want was met. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness. This one came out +23.2 against an ordinary date: friends needs +6.5, a second date +12.0. Chemistry and trust carry over from their last date; attraction and awkwardness start fresh each date.
“Lead the way. Let's see if that diner's coffee can strip paint.”
